Our Home in Myanmar: Four years in Yangon

I have never written a review before but felt compelled to write one for this book. My childrens grandpa came from Myanmar just after WW2. He didnt speak much about his life there and sadly died some years ago after reaching his 80's. My girls are are young teens and want to know more about their heritage and with no one to give them first hand information I started my own quest to find out. I stumbled across Jessica Mudditts book on my initial search and from the moment I started reading it was unable to put it down. It is written with honesty and kindness and I felt her anguish horror and saddness at the racism she witnessed and smiled laughted and took sharp intakes of breath at the experiences and landscape she describes. I felt like I came away understanding more about the people of Myanmars psychie than I ever could reading a 'facts book'. It is a book that will stay with me forever. Thank you Jessica for sharing your time in Yangon so that I can share it with my children.

Excellent read! Couldn’t put the book down. Having lived in Myanmar for 2 years naturally knew some of the names and places and could relate to many of the stories told.

I had no idea what to expect when Amazon’s algorithm suggested to me this seemingly self-published book about Myanmar. But boy, am I glad I bought it! I admit that the algorithm knew its customer inasmuch as I am interested in Burma. Even if the book were about somewhere else, though, I think I’d still find it appealing for its engaging authorial voice and attention to detail. That it’s about mysterious Myanmar makes it all the more a delightful read, since I one can’t find much about contemporary Myanmar beyond day-to-day news articles. This narrative about a relatively recent sojourn in Myanmar answers many questions I have about the place…and it inspires me further to want to go there. This book is great! Obey the Amazon algorithm and buy it!

An intimate and fascinating book that breathed life into a place I otherwise had little insight into. I loved learning about Myanmar at what already seems like a long-ago time in its history, at the intersection of the day to day life of an expat journalist setting up a home there and the political context for her experiences. A great read with very funny moments. Highly recommended.

It is nice Jessica shared her experiences on working in Myanmar as a journalist. As no one else she could tell how it was to live in the turbulent years of transformation. I wish the book be longer, though.

Most enjoyable after having visited Myanmar three times in a comparable time frame. Certainly highlight s the idiosyncrasies of a fascinating complex country.

I have travelled to Myanmar many times. It was very interesting to hear the perspective of an expat who lived there during that period of time as opposed to my experiences as a tourist. My first visit was in 1999 so I saw amazing changes between then and my last visit in 2016. So many things made me laugh as I read her account of daily life and the quirky.things.that make it a truly unique country. I am so sad to see what is happening there now. My heart and prayers are with the people there that have become my very dear friends.
