DVD/CD Receiver

Works well though not full-featured
I’m not sure if this particular model was ever sold in the U.S. Searches for reviews a short while back came up with buyers in Canada and further abroad. I took a chance on it anyway and it seems promising for my purposes but I have only done some quick testing at this point. It does not come with matched speakers but still seems to be worth several times what the price is now. The unit arrived well protected in original packaging inside a larger Amazon box. I ordered from Secondipity and they very kindly provided a credit when the price dropped a significant amount just the day after I received mine.I am eventually looking to replace a full size system in my living room with something of approximate functionality but much smaller size. You can get slimline AV receivers and micro components from several manufacturers but you pay a premium for less height and they are still the same width or for less width but still tall. I wanted skinny in height and width like this unit. This seems to be unsold stock of an older and likely discontinued model. It has no Bluetooth, no WiFi, no subwoofer connection, cheaper speaker connection terminals, and doesn’t play Bluray discs. It is also light on power though worked well enough with my Energy bookshelf speakers. It seems like it would get loud enough for a smaller room or at low-medium volume listening. The DVD player worked quietly in my testing. I do listen to a lot of music off a USB and this Pioneer has that option on the front. Unfortunately, there doesn’t seem to be a shuffle function that works with mp3 files on USB. That was a little disappointing. It seems as if it might shuffle mp3 files on a CD if anyone is still using those. My plan is to use this as an amp to power a newer Bluray player that will handle DVD and Bluray discs and give me Internet apps for radio and streaming movies. As a test I connected this through a ViewHD HDMI Audio Extractor. I was able to send the video from the Bluray player on to my TV and the audio through this receiver's R/L line in to my speakers.Having confirmed it can do what I will eventually want it to do I didn’t really test it out much further so I can’t comment on extended use. The unit, even along with all the packaging, is very light. You can decide if that is good or bad. A couple of other notes – this came with Spanish as the default language for the OSD. It took just a few minutes looking through a searchable PDF version of the manual to figure out how to change it to English. You pretty much have to have this connected to a TV all the time if you want to be able to navigate the different settings because they don’t display fully on the unit itself. At the price it is now ($50) this is a really good deal if it fits your needs but be aware of its limitations. I have attached a photo to show the top view with venting.

Good things come in small packages.
I bought this to replace my recently deceased Sony Discman. I've been pleasantly surprised at the quality of sound this unit puts out. I use it mostly to listen to Jazz on CD while I'm pedaling away on my exercise bike. I listen through Sennheiser HD-202 headphones. This unit works very well for that purpose. Another reviewer reported he was unable to set up the FM presets. Didn't work for me either, but since I bought this little beauty for the built in CD player, that's no problem. The unit has a built in bass boost which is the default condition. I found it to be too much boost for my ears. Fortunately the bass boost can be disabled by pressing the P.Bass button on the remote, but this must be done every time the unit is turned on. The X-HM21V-K suits my purposes perfectly -- and the price can't be beat.

Right tool for the right job.
Ok, this is NOT a high end receiver. However, it is an excellent compact receiver that is perfectly suitable for bookshelf speakers (i.e. on a desk). I have 2 of these-- one paired to a set of Bose 301s (my office) and a pair of 201's (Wife's desk). Sound quality is great, even at maximum. Works with iPod/iPad/iPhone & USB media. Only complaint would be you MUST have the remote to perform some functions (i.e. Equalizer... so don't lose or misplace it), and FM Tuner tuning is VERY painful (read the section on programming the 10 presets and use them-- or go crazy). Otherwise, is a very nice tuner.

Excellent unit for the price
Excellent unit for the price! However, tuning to a radio station is excruciatingly slow. There is no fast tuning to the station you want. The tuner will lock on to the next station even though you have the up/down button pressed. So you have to constantly keep pressing the button. So imagine if you want to listen to FM106.70 and you're at 92.3. You could get around this by saving stations in the memory. No dice. Tried everything possible, nothing worked. I have to admit, the tuner is extremely sensitive, FM stations were clear and pristine and with a pair of BIC DV 32 speakers, music was rich with lively mids and more than adequate bottom end. I really don't want to return it but after 2 days of utter frustration, i was ready to toss it out the window.

From Pioneer Mexico
Very happy with the unit. It was made for the Mexican market, thus it comes ready to play zone 4 DVDS (Latin America and Caribbean). Good range of outputs. Buy decent speakers and it will suprise you.

OK system for the price but there are better choices.
The vendor (Air Tech) service was excellent-delivered in 2 days just before Christmas. The price was also great at $109.The unit was more compact than I expected and it sounded OK. It had a very nice looking finish on the face and overall professional look. But it did NOT come with speakers as given in the Q & A section and it does not have AM radion only FM although the specs on the Canadian Pioneer web site shows both speakers and AM/FM. The connections on the front were a plus(USB, audion in and phones out) but I found the buttons on the front too small and the display awkward to see ( I have it sitting at table height). The remote was too confusing partly because of the extra buttons for playing DVDs which I was not going to be using. There is no bluetooth but I was able to plug in bluetooth adapters to rectify that. Finally when playing CDs the Source button on the front or the CD button on the remote had to be used to tell the unit to recognize it then push the play button to start it and the display showed only the track number not the song or album title. All in all I found it a bit frustrating and returned it which cost me $23. But I am much happier with my new one which cost almost twice as much with the same power but has all the features that this one didn't, user friendly remote, larger buttons on top, displayed facing slightly upwards, speakers, automatically recognizes and plays CD, displays album and song title, and bluetooth 4.

Good micro hi-fi system for the price!
The Pioneer X-HM21V-K is quite good for the price. After evaluating the unit for the past couple of weeks, here are my list of pros and cons.PROS:+ Decent sound for a small unit+ Surprisingly strong bass for such small speakers (the speaker cabinets are ported and quite deep for its size)+ It has a warm sound overall and does not distort at maximum volume+ Plays DVD with HDMI outputCONS:- The disc player mechanism is not completely silent- The unit cannot display song titles and other related information when playing music through the iPod interface- The unit has less power compared to some of its competitor (it cannot play as loudly)- This unit only have a FM tuner (no DAB or AM)Note: The amplifier and speakers are rated at 15 watts (RMS) into 8 ohms per channel. This is different from what is published by Amazon (they mentioned the same wattage (RMS) but into 4 ohms). Conclusion: I am pleased with the Pioneer X-HM21V-K. For the price, it delivers good musical performance. It is not perfect but for those who are looking for a decently price micro hi-fi that provides good amount of bass and sonic abilities, you will not be disappointed.

subtle and perfect. And I must to answer to Mr
Pioneer micro sound system - is micro, subtle and perfect. And I must to answer to Mr. Surrao who's claimed "the number keys were not working which control most of the functions like the preset memory for the radio and to switch ... Mr. Surrao, all works great. At the bottom of the remote is one button "shift", we have to press it and next "memory" key. Unfortunately the manual instruction doesn't say anything about "shift" key. In that way You can store 40 radio stations. On the plus side of this Pioneer is the sound. Speakers are small but deep enough to give us very good and clear sound. If you don't need more than 30W RMS this one is one of the best. Highly recommended... !!!

Highly recommend this compact system
Excellent package. Receiver/tuner is compact with a subtle display, hence it blends in rather than stands out on the shelf. Sound is excellent. Special kudos to the volume control which is analog allowing very subtle changes to the volume, or, very drastic changes with a twist of the wrist. There is, essentially, an equalizer via the remote, though we are using one of the pre-configured settings which hits the right bass-treble balance. So, great controls, and great sound in a compact, non-intrusive package.

the number keys were not working which control most of the functions like the preset memory for the radio and to switch ...
I bought this unit and the remote that came with it was defective, the number keys were not working which control most of the functions like the preset memory for the radio and to switch between stereo/mono stations. The sound quality was also not what I was expecting from a pioneer unit that costs over $250. I requested to return it and the seller emailed me his adders and expected me to pay the return postage. One they received the unit back they claimed to have tested it and it was working fine and refused to refund the return postage. There reasoning was the the number keys are not suppose to work in tuner mode and only work in CD/DVD mode...I would not purchase or recommend any product from AVGear again.
