Excellent for Bench Testing
I have old G3 iMacs that needed replacement optical drives. Since these Macs have to be taken apart in order to install these drives, I needed a way to verify them as most of them have been purchased on ebay. Old iMac drives are slot loading, so I wanted to test three things:1. Power.2. The action of the loading mechanism.3. The ability to read from discs. This hooks up to the JAE-50 pin connector on your internal drive, and is powered by USB. The package includes:1. The board itself.2. USB/a to USB/b type cable for data.3. Power supply cable with USB/a and a barrel type connector. It's very straightforward and it comes with no instructions. Hook the board to the drive, the USB data cable to a free USB port on your PC/MAC and the same with the power supply. I managed to hook up and test the drive I purchased mainly because I didn't want to tear the iMac down and find out the drive was faulty in some way.The manufacturer says you can use this device with the optical drive you removed from your PC in a pinch whenever you need to just watch a movie or rip a CD into iTunes. I think this use case is very dubious. There's an inexpensive USB optical enclosure right here on Amazon for about $3 more than this which effectively turns your internal drive into a fully baked external unit. No exposed cables or PCBs. If I was going to do as the manufacturer suggests in the description, the enclosure is the way to go.I see this product as more of a technician's tool. Being able to test a raw drive outside of the computer is very useful if you are doing a lot of these, as I have. Particularly on slot loading drives, which have more points of failure on them. You can use this to clean, adjust and verify the a drive's operation. The only thing I really need is a wall wart, however, since most people have them already, it's not that big a deal. No stars taken away. So, use this for testing, if you need a more permanent solution, look up: USB Optical Drive,Richer-R 12.7mm USB 2.0 Slim Portable Optical Drive Case External Mobile Enclosure Kit for Laptop XP/ 2003/ Vista/ Win7/ Linux/Mac 10 OS and More.

Works on Compaq laptop HP DVD-ROM UJDA770 and Windows 10
I took apart on a 2006 Compaq V-2000 laptop. The HP DVD-ROM/CD-RW model UJDA770 worked perfectly with this adapter and supplied cables on my Dell Inspiron 5593 and Windows 10 version 1909. The Dell 5593, like most new laptops, does not have a DVD. Using this adapter allowed me to install some very old software I could not load without a DVD/CD drive. Windows found the DVD as soon as I plugged it in. No problems. I did use both the data and the power cable. The only issue I have is the lack of screws to attach the apter board to the DVD drive....but friction holds it in place and it works on the temporary basis for which I needed. If I were using the DVD drive more, then the lack of screws and short cables would be a problem.......but it works great!

Perfect!
The logic board on my 2007 Macbook Pro died, so I tore it apart to salvage as much as I could before I e-wasted it. One of the parts I saved was the DVD/CD optical drive since the Macbook Air I just bought didn't have one and I'm too cheap/pissed off to dish out another 80 bucks after spending $1,000.This works perfectly. I don't even need to use the power cord that is provided. It'd be great if it came with a case/enclosure, but I won't use it a whole lot, so that's not a big deal for me. It is, however, a little side heavy once you plug in the USB wire, so I simply taped the adapter to the optical drive and I'm good to go.ADVICE: Just make sure that this is the correct connector for your drive. This is not a SATA.

Works
Item is for a laptop DVD/CD drive that has (I believe) an unusual connector. Needed an adapter to be able to use it with may laptop that does not come with a DVD drive. Works great.

gives old equipment new life
Had a spare 50-pin slot load DVD/RW drive and needed a slim drive, so I bought a BD-ROM/DVD-RW drive in an enclosure. I pulled that drive and put it in my new mini-ITX build, bought this, and put my old slot drive into the enclosure - fired up and worked right out of the box. Success on Win7 and Ubuntu 11.10 boxes.
