Challenging but incredibly useful.
This book cites real scientific studies. Lots of them. Expect to learn more than you thought you wanted/needed to know about phosphorylation and metabolic pathways and gene expression etc. etc.Key takeaways:* A large portion of 'conventional wisdom' on hypertrophy is based on studies on animal models (i.e. rats), the elderly, or untrained individuals. Meta-analyses cited in this book show that already resistance-trained people respond *very* differently to exercise. If you've already been lifting for a while, expect to have long-held views challenged!* More dose-response relationships than you would expect are threshold-based vs linear. Meaning: as long as you're getting *enough* of a given macronutrient, micronutrient (vitamin/mineral), or even exercise stimulus, more of that thing doesn't necessarily equate to more gains.* You need to be getting an array of low-rep high-weight and moderate-rep moderate-weight resistance training stimulus to keep climbing. An understanding of periodization over the short, medium and long term is necessary to sustain gains, because as you approach your 'genetic potential' your body will make it harder and harder to pack on muscle.* Apparently low intensity steady-state cardio is just…unequivocally counterproductive for gaining muscle.I'm really glad I read this book and I'd recommend it for anyone who wants to take their programming and diet to the next level!

Great book!
This is an excellent book! I have a small library and several health and fitness books. I learned new information from this book. It is a little on the academic side, which I like because I am a bio-geek. Summarizes several studies. Probably the most informative book on muscle development that I have ever read. Looking forward to reading future books from Brad Schoenfeld.

The science of muscle growth from a top expert in the field
Are you into weightlifting or strength training? Do you want to gain muscle but don't know the best place to go? STOP - don't listen to the 'gym gurus,' ignore that instagram 'expert' and BUY. THIS. BOOK. Brad is a well-known researcher, author and speaker in the fitness industry and this book is a culmination of his many, many years of working in exercise science and fitness. This is a technical read but provides very detailed explanations of how muscles adapt to the imposed demands of strength training. As someone who does a lot of writing and blogging for the American Council on Exercise, Brad is one of my go-to resources for scientifically valid information and he should become one of yours too.

Very technical, but very informative
I have a background in neuroscience and I still found this challenging at some points, particularly the first chapter on physiology, but like training hard it’s well worth the effort. The rest of the book goes through actual experiments carried out by the author and fellow researchers to cut through the myths about what does and doesn’t work in the gym and on your plate. Some questions remain unanswered due to lack of research but I think this book is quite comprehensive and covers most of the ground related to how muscle is built at the cellular level, what factors you can control to influence it both in the gym and with regards to nutrition. Well worth the time and effort. Not for everyone, especially those who don’t like science or are comfortable reading in depth technical writing. But for those who can manage that, it’ll pay off. Even if you don’t understand everything, I admit I didn’t, he gives take home points and summaries to make the research more practical to the reader.

This is easy to understand though some further research on your part ...
Clear and concise explanation of the science and methodology behind hypertrophy. Brad has further added multiple scientific studies at the end of every chapter along with a summary. It doesn't say "NO, don't do this," but instead goes on to show studies including conflicting ones for the readers to make their own judgement.I've also had books where writers literally fill up the entire book with sample "programs." It's not the case with this book. It's basically chapter after chapter of knowledge that either reinforce what you've learnt and forgotten or keep you up to date with current scientific development with regard to muscle hypertrophy. As a certified personal trainer who's also a physical education teacher, it's hard to find books that speak sense without going into big jargon. This is easy to understand though some further research on your part is required.

ALL THE THEORY YOU NEED
I AM IN THE FITNESS INDUSTRY FOR 12 YEARS, WORKING ON BUILDING STRONG AND HEALTHY MEN AND WOMEN. THIS BOOK WAS ALL I NEEDED TO CLOSE ALL THE HOLES IN THE THEORETICAL PART OF MUSCLE HYPERTROPHY. THE AUTHOR TAKES YOU FOR A JOURNEY FROM ACTINE, MYOCINE AND ALL THE BIOCHEMICAL MECHANISMS IN BETWEEN TO ALL THE HORMONE PATHWAYS THAT LEED TO HYPERTROPHY. AND ALL BASED IN FULL SCIENTIFIC RESEARCH REVIEWS. BUT GOING ALL THE WAY IN THEORY FORGETS TO GIVE THE READER PURE PRACTICAL CONCLUSIONS. BUT IF HE DID THAT HE COULD NOT WRITE ANOTHER BOOK......

If you are a gym book nerd, you'll love it
Wow, a VERY technical book. Dives deep into medical and scientific terms regarding muscle Hypertrophy. I think the author could have 'dumbed it down' a bit so that the reader doesn't get lost in big words and complicated process names. I'm sure I'll read this book cover to cover numerous times to help me understand the process better and better.

Evidence based approach to hypertrophy factors
I have found a lot of valuable information in this book. Taking an evidence based approach, variables such as training frequency, volume, intensity and periodisation among many others are discussed. It's taking me a while to get through and I've found that it's best read in short chunks due to it's scientific style; but I have already began to apply some of the concepts in practice. I would recommend this book; particularly to those that enjoy in depth analysis of their training.
