Tie Me Up! Tie Me Down! ATAME! VHS

For what it is, it is good.
I saw this presented to me as a late-night movie, many years ago. At that time, those movies were often almost free of a story, characterization, or any sort of romance, but this was a movie of another kind. There was an attempt at a story, acting, romance, and some bondage and sex scenes presented in a perhaps uncommon way. If a love story and a sex movie can co-exist in this era with a slice-of-life movie, perhaps this is it.

redefine family
Pedro Almodóvar always makes though provoking cinema. I was surprised this was considered controversial more than 30 years ago when I was introduced to it (NC-17)Answers all those questions about what makes a man a good partner and father?(Antonio Banderas) - even if he grew up in an institution. do you really want someone to listen to you or fix a problem? is being tied up romantic?(Victoria Abril) all made somehow with being a serious and fun exploration of relationships. and what it means to have and BE family. So for 30 years I have been recommending this as a first date film. just have a conversation.beautiful 2k blu ray remaster.

This movie would have been 5/5 if in English and so much funnier.
I decided to rent this movie after hearing about it in a show. Didn’t know it was entirely in Spanish. Love Antonio Banderas! This is funny and cute. Don’t wanna give spoilers but Stockholm syndrome is a thing lol. I liked it despite having to read in English! The comments were too funny. Would fully recommend for a late night movie to watch. I would also view it again in the future.

Loved it
I didn't expect to like it so much. It was a very surprising ending, and altogether, I loved it! This is not one for the kiddies, please! It is for what they call, mature audiences. It wasn't what I expected, and I didn't expect like it as much as I did, honestly, but it was very good. I'm looking forward to watching it again.I LOVE Pedro Almodovar's films. I recently discovered his movies, and this is one of the better ones, for sure. I can't wait to see ALL of his movies, and I hope he keeps making these wonderful movies about the emotional and interior lives of women. They're absolutely a total delight. Did you think I was going to give away the plot, or the ending? Not a chance. You watch, if you like Pedro's movies, you'll probably love it too.

Which Film is Almodovar's Best?
It is clear to me that Pedro Almodovar has never made a bad movie. For many years, my favorite Almodovar film has been Women on the Verge of a Nervous Breakdown (aka Mujeres al Borde de un Ataque de Nervios). I was unable to obtain a copy Of Atame on DVD or blu-ray for a long time. I just saw the film for the first time in many years. I still tend to prefer Women on the Verge, which has an impressive cast, great music (Manuel de Falla's magic fire music) and plenty of humor: e.g. the driver of Mambo Taxi, who always appears when the actors need a ride. The lead actress (Carmen Maura) is outstanding and Antonio Banderas appears in a role which could not be more different than the one he played in Atame.I don't want to be the judge of Almodovar's best film. I would like to see a number of nominations and let the majority decide. It is possible but unlikely that his next film will be his best.

One of Almodovar's best films
I first saw this film during its theater release in 1990 and really enjoyed it. I've read reviewers here labelling the film as a comedy and this is not true. The movie is a romantic drama, its about relationships. Its not a light chick flick that works to get laughs. Its aim is to showcase the main characters in their quest to find love, Its an unconventional love story that shows a deep portrayal of the characters....classic Almodovar. Victoria Abril is amazing here, just perfect. The dvd I bought is from 2014 and the film looks great. A lot of bonus features make it very worthwhile.

but fun in a sadistic kinda way
First off. .you must be able to handle subtitles if you don't speak Spanish. This is a very offbeat and weird movie. .but fun in a sadistic kinda way. I enjoyed the progress but the beginning was creepy. I'm glad I stuck around for the whole movie. It highlights how obession can turn to love and how it can ruin.

I have a vhs version of this movie and have ...
I have a vhs version of this movie and have watched it several times and due to the pending deterioration of tape I decided to purchase the blue-ray version. I have not viewed this one but will and am looking forward to the other features on the disc that do not exist on the tape. The first time I saw the wind-up diver do his appointed task I thought I would never stop laughing. What a insanely clever visual identification of what he was.

a sublime reworking of La Belle et la bete
Another breathtaking film from Almodovar means that he made three masterpieces in a row, this one following hot on the heels of Law Of Desire and Women On The Verge Of A Nervous Breakdown. Antonio Banderas stars in all three, and here his role is as daring as that in Law Of Desire, which already showed him to be fearless in acting terms. What an outrageous premise it is, and so un-PC, that a man (Ricky), released from a psychiatric hospital, could kidnap a woman, tie her up, with the absurd conviction that she could be made to fall in love with him, and then for that to happen! While some would say it is tasteless, or irresponsible even, Almodovar pulls it off as possibly only he could. It is something you have to see to believe it, but that is what you are convinced really happens, and are moved by it ... It is always interesting to see a specific case that breaks all the rules, I think, and forces us to think less rigidly about human behaviour; but actually Almodovar's film cuts deep in its empathy and belief in humanity. There is a lot of love in this film, and of understanding of the need for love. It would not work without a carefully written screenplay which peels back layers of Ricky's personality bit by bit, and the wonderful casting of Victoria Abril as Marina, an ex-porn actress and ex-junkie who somehow brings everything together to present vulnerability, strength, courage, tenderness ... Her sister, played by the very camp Loles Leon, sounds a very complementary note, with a song-and-dance number and completely fabulous presence in every scene she appears in. Her presence is a marvellous foil to the quite serious notes of the central relationship, and it is more violent than I recall in any of his previous films (except possibly Matador), in keeping with the darker tone (this would be reproduced in the slightly similar Live Flesh, which charts the life of a similar young man right from the violence of being born unexpectedly on a bus). These aspects are underpinned by a somewhat ruminative score by Ennio Morricone. Then there is the vibrant colour scheme, all reds and greens, with sudden blues, as in the electric credits at the beginning, the word "Attame!" appearing in a blue cloud against music of mystery that already seems to be opening up all the senses. The parallels with Cocteau's La Belle et la bete are very striking, even to his carrying her through two doors which seem to open miraculously, pushed by his foot, and where we see her legs coming through from the other side, not to mention the way the last part is set up ... and also a half-man half-monster character on the film set she is working on at the beginning. This gives the film a further poise in tone, somewhere between real life and fantasy, with an almost mythical aspect. It really is cinema at its most magical.

dark and different for banderas
I honestly did not know what to expect from this film--but glad i watched it.I first went to the 'special features' section, and watched the interview between Banderas and Almodovar and found this to be very interesting and informative for the film.So the film itself--well very good indeed.Banderas' character[Ricky] is discharged from a mental care facility, where it is clear he has been'a bad kitty!!!'with one lady in particular.However,--he tries, and succeeds ,in finding an old flame, who is now a'B'movie porn starlet. He keeps her just to himself by force, sometimes and this is a type of character different for Banderas[in general].The film was very watchable and there was only one small scene, when I thought'YUK!!!!-WAS THAT REALLY NECESSARY??]But it is only one very small scene. It kept me very well entertained and,yes it is subtitled from the Spanish, but that does not detract at all.I would also advise anyone to go the 'special features' and watch the Madrid Premiere scene---for the very good piece of music.Understandably, this film would not be for everyone. But try it--you just may like.
