Very Best of
B**"
The Very Best Of indeed!
Early Rhythm and blues has always held a deep fascination with me. As I grow older I become more of a fan of the genre. Strangely, I started off as a 90's pop fanatic. Christina Aguilera was everything. Britney Spears was God. lol. Then I started getting into older acts like Madonna. I digress, but still I was a burgeoning 50's R&B fanatic, maybe not at first, but I listened to the classics and fell in love. Soon I was buying old Rhythm and Blues albums..... LaVern Baker, Ruth Brown even. But Jackie Wilson was one of the best. I urge anyone who claims themselves a lover of old R&B to watch Jackie Wilson's performances on YouTube. This man would do splits and acrobatics! He was phenomenal on stage. And that voice! He was on key with a range that was far reaching for a male or female. He was soulful and his voice communicated to listeners easily. Whether it be sad songs or love songs, he handled them with aplomb. He was phenomenal! Boy could Jackie Wilson sing his tail off!"The Very Best Of" is an import from UK reissue Ace records. It features 24 of Jackie's most popular and best singles on one disc. These are the songs that made Jackie one of the early inventors of soul music. The REMASTERING on this album is really good. The vocals come through loud and clear and the songs picked are certainly Jackie's best work. Listen to "Lonely Teardrops", It's a classic. Other great gems are abound on this compact, but highly enjoyable set. If u want vocals Jackie brings them on songs like the almost operettic hit "Night". While all my favorites ("Lonely Teardrops", "To Be Loved", "A Woman a lover"...and "Talk That Talk") are included on this wonderful set.My only complaint is that the final few seconds of "Lonely Teardrops", (Ya know, the one with THE high note) are cut from this collection. This doesn't happen with "The Ultimate Collection" and I don't know why it happens on this one as it should've been relatively easy to included the full version on this collection.Don't let that distract u from making this purchase though as all the tracks have great remastering and this truly is his very best. It may not have EVERYTHING, but what's here is the cream of the crop and it's great that it's all on one disc. Jackie was amazing! They'll never be another. I'm glad I made this purchase and you'll be glad too. I recommend this set for all fellow soul aficionados. 5/5 stars. Highly recommended.

Don't Order With CDNow
I probably don't need to tell anyone reading this review that the Very Best of Jackie Wilson is a great album. This is probably the most comprehensive compilation available (short of a box set). Ace Records is an outstanding reissue company. But, when you order this through the CDNow Preferred Buyers club you'll receive The Very Best of Jackie Wilson as issued by Rhino Records. This version has about 8 tracks less than the Ace release. CDNow doesn't even carry the Ace version and the $9.99 price is a misprint. Don't get me wrong though, the Ace version is definitely worth the extra five bucks. As of now Amazon hasn't fixed the misprint, so I just wanted to save someone the frustration of ordering the CD waiting, and then having to return it, and re-order it from Amazon.

Mr. Excitment is still exciting
Mr. Excitement as Jackie Wilson was known is still exciting. This CD has all of the good songs. I didn't think the quality of production was that good - It sounded like the original recording without the enhancement of modern technology. Nevertheless, Jackie is a bad dude and these songs have stood the test of time. How can you not like: Lonely Teardrops, Baby Workout and Doggin Around. I remember Jackie on the Ed Sullivan Show dancing on top of a piano with his patent leather shoes sliding to the edge of the piano and singing his up tempo songs - What an entertainer. He was Mr. Excitment. What a tragic life he wound up having.

Jackie legacy lives on
The fact that the late great Jackie Wilson was taken from us so early as well as so sadly prompts us all to ask would he have left even greater music. Nevertheless, his legacy lives on with his late fifties doo wop style and culminating in the classic tracks [your love keeps lifting me] Higher and higher & I get the seetest feeling. I play music at weddings, 21sts 18ths etc and it never ceases to amaze me the different people of all ages who both request and enjoy those two tracks in particular. Also included is his post humous number one hit Reet petite which was released originally in the 1950`s. The subject of several songs such as Commodores Nightshift and in particular Van Morrisons I`M in heaven when you smile a big hit also for Dexy`s midnight runners, Jackie takes his place in musical history and this collection gives a very good insight into his work.

Absolut spitze!!
