This is Why I love SUSHI!!
I had gotten a referral from a friend to see this movie because she knows that I LOVE SUSHI!!! And I'm a fanatic when it comes to eating great sushi and hearing about everything that goes into it, where to get it, how to make etc. So I made it a point to get the movie. Now I'm even more enthusiastic about getting me some good sushi....it was incredible watching Jiro and his journey....its true he is the absolute master in the game. It goes to show you, find something you truly love and then find a way to make money!!! that's the secret to his success. Jiro is such a wonderful person, he went through many struggles. I loved seeing him; this was a great documetary....it won't really show you "how to make" sushi but its the look into the mind and world of a man "truly sent here from God" who possesses the integrity and desire to BE THE BEST at his one true gift; that is making sushi. His outright determination to honor the skill and craft his ability to respect the art of making sushi is enough to make you want to cry. He has mastered this skill to a level that no one else could dream of; at all the same time mentoring his sons to follow in his footsteps!!! what an exepctional documentary; the boys were so loyal and greatful to have been taught by the master.Jiro has done this same craft for over 75 years!!! I can't even imagine what that must be like that's why I rented the movie!! the filmmakers allowed us to see up front what kind of person it takes to become a legend like Jiro. I'm simply in aw over him. I can't believe i witnessed it with my own eyes. It does not get any better than this.As I continue to salivate I'm saving to make my way to Japan to see if I can get to his restaurant!!! Maybe I can meet him and shake his hand....we'll see!!Happy eating!

Ultimate sushi = ultimate in Japanese culture and tradition
Magnificent in its simple depiction of profound commitment to achieving the ultimate - as always in life it doesn't happen by accident but by endless yet dedicated pursuit of the best. Just like winning a gold medal in the Olympics, this has to be your calling to achieve the ultimate outcome.

A meditative and fulfilling documentary
What about a sushi restaurant could possibly grab a viewer's attention for the better part of an hour and a half? It's not the food that captivates an audience, it's the man behind the magic, Jiro. For starters, the 85 year old Jiro runs his restaurant with the most impossibly high standards of cleanliness, taste, and presentation. So high are his standards, that it takes any of his chefs in training 10 years to master what I would call his "art."But digging deeper into his discipline (perhaps in Western civilization, obsessiveness), we find that he rolls each piece of sushi individually just seconds before it's enjoyed by his patrons; all the while compensating his serving size for women/men, placing the pieces of sushi on plates depending on the dominant hand of each patron, and scrutinizing the size of each piece of fish he serves. He is ninja-like in his dedication to the art of sushi-making and considers it more of a lifestyle, a mindset really, than he does a job. If you happen to make it to Japan, the minimum $375 and one month advanced reservation it takes to get into Jiro's sushi restaurant would absolutely be worth it...if nothing else but for the experience alone. It's rare to find a film that so perfectly compliments its subject matter with its camerawork and sequencing. Please spend the few bucks to check out this rental--you can gain a new life perspective for $3, which is about as cheap as they come.

Thought provoking & inspiring
"I would see ideas in dreams..." This is a documentary about obsession, compulsion and a samurai-like focus towards perfection in one's craft- all elegantly wrapped in layers of humility. This is a portrait of eighty-five year old sushi master Jiro Ono. It offers insight into his life and the inner workings of his prestigious humble little 10-seat sushi bar Sukiyabashi Jiro. His story is beautifully told and artfully filmed. Highly recommended- especially if you have any interest in the culinary world.

The filmmakers showed a man who has a fierce dedication ...
The filmmakers showed a man who has a fierce dedication to his craft and takes his work very seriously. Interesting film and brings a lot of insight to the world of sushi, especially the part about the globalization of demand and the sustainability of something as a national dish of Japan.

Amazing movie
Maybe because I love sushi, I don't know, but this movie was so engaging and fascinating. We got to see the wisdom and drive of the sushi master and his sons, and the inner workings of a Japanese fish market were great. I would recommend this movie

you will be much more satisfied in your job and keep motivated easier
I'm a designer and bought it for inspiration, but it exceeded my expectations by far. It teaches you about endurance, about mastery of your craft, about perfection, and that you never should stop learning. For me it's not that much about food or sushi, but more about life in general. You don't need to be the next Jiro, but if you just follow his principles a bit, you will be much more satisfied in your job and keep motivated easier.

Haunting, beautiful and funny
I saw this in the theatre and then haunted Amazon until it came out so I could buy it. One if the most beautiful and haunting films you'll see. Jiro and his sons are so engaging you get totally caught up in their world. The movie speaks of family and sustainability and craft in I way I have never seen anywhere else. Eve though the subject is quite serious and could have been heavy going in the wrong hands the movie has an endearing warmth and humour that is utterly captivating. I couldn't stop thinking about this film and it still stays with me all these months later.

Fascinating portrait of a perfectionist obsessive
I've just watched this. It is a well made film about an amazing man, his drive for perfection in the art of making sushi and the impact on his sons, workers and suppliers. If, like me, your experience of sushi has been M&S or a conveyor belt sushi bar, be prepared to adjust your expectations. I found the entire 82 minutes fascinating.

BUY THIS!
fantastic engaging endearing hypnotic informative. The sort of film I can happily watch many times, occasionally finding new pleasures, revisiting moments of subtle character. I came away with a great respect for the characters, and incidentally as a result of their experience, a fresh concern for the future of this planet's wildlife diversity.
