....wonderfully researched ...
Another wonderfully researched contribution from Captivating History. It does become rather dry as the text rambles through a litany of successive rulers and the switching back-and-forth between religions. More information about the common inhabitants and their circumstances would be welcome. There are mentions of the amazing Tonle Sap lake - but not that the river feeding it reverses flow twice a year in sync with the seasons. There is also reference to the ancient Water Festival - but not that it continues today. The benefits of the ancient irrigation in Angkor are references as to their significant impact - but no reference as to just how they operated. Similarly with a reference to carvings featuring 'weapons of the day' - but no indication as to just what they were.Due to the lack of verifiable ancient information 'Captivating' have that wonderful knack of assuming and guessing what could have happened and including that in the text.

A mysterious and magical place...
This publication is closely tied to a prior release from Captivating History which summarized the history of Cambodia. A slice of that general history has been expanded to share the period between the 10th and 15 centuries which were dominated by the Khmer Empire. This is a kingdom that once dominated the political, culture and, economic world of Southeast Asia. Its capital, at its economic and social peak, housed over a million people and was one of the most densely populated cities in the world. The Khmer Empire was not an empire in the modern sense of the world but are given that status because of its longevity. Human habitats of all social ranks were built out of perishable materials and only the gods and their houses were worthy enough to be built out of stone. The water systems, reservoirs, and streets had religious meaning; they therefore were given strong and sturdy materials that survived the relentless growth of the Southeast Asian jungle.Over the years, people continued to find shelter among the walls and ruins which were enveloped by the growth, yet its beauty was revealed when whenever the jungle was cut down. Matt concludes his history of this empire by observing that the area of the is a mysterious and magical place and its popularity as a spiritual place continues to grow.A brief list of references is provided at the end.

I learned about the Khmer Empire. I knew next to nothing about this empire and was happy to learn something new. This was a fairly quick and interesting read.

The not very captivating guide
The author(s) is/are not identified in this 80 page large-print book. The copyright page fine print declares it is “for entertainment purposes only.” I was left feeling it was written at a grade school level and it was not very entertaining.

There is a hidden meaning behind every stone laid down.
Angkor was the largest city in the world, almost the size of Los Angeles. The Khmer Empire was one of the greatest empires in ancient Asia.Angkor the capital city, was built in such a way that one side was protected by the Tonle Sap Lake and the other three sides by the wild jungle.

An Exemplary History of a Special Place
Cambodia both is a unique country and possesses an interesting history. What may not be as known, however, is how at its height the Khmer Empire ended up ruling not only most of Southeast Asia but also parts of southern China. Captivating History's "The Khmer Empire" describes this and more in an exceptional work of historical research. The Khmer Empire was powerful. Specifically, it is the name given to Cambodia from the 9th to 15th centuries. Many key historical developments were made during this time, as this author demonstrates by highlighting them in chronological order from the foundations of this empire to its abandonment.Research-wise, there is nothing within these pages but pure excellence. The historiography, references, and end bibliography are wonderful. The included visual media does not hurt, either. Here is the verdict: Read this book! It is well worth the time.
