had not read it before
I am 83-years- old but, because I grew up in a foreign country I had never read The Great Gatsby. Now. On its 100th anniversary I learn it is still one of the most popular books to be included in the reading list for high schools throughout the country. So I said to myself it is time to read it if I want to understand the American mind. And I have 2 things to say (1) there wasn’t a character that I didn’t recognize, meaning that they all looked like people that I have actually encountered in the US and that are uniquely American. But (2) this is not a story of typecast characters, the way many cheap thrillers are: there is something very real about the main characters in the book which is what makes it interesting. I wish I knew how that is accomplished!

I've never really liked it...
I don't really care for The Great Gatsby because for the most part, I don't like any of the characters I like Nick the most .. Gatsby is stuck in a dream of days past. I do think that it's the book that you most think of when you think of the 'Roaring 20s' or the 'jazz age'. The rich seemed to ,be obscenely rich, and the poor seemed to be so sadly poor. I read it now and the to try and figure it out, and make sense of it.

A classic work and particularly relevant for these times .
Over the top presentation (page edges gilded and such) but the print was good size and I am very pleased with all aspects of this purchase. And it is good to be reminded from the twenties of eternal American truths such as "They were a careless people" and "Americans, while willing, even eager to be serfs, have always been obstinate about being peasantry.

Reading this on the 100 year anniversary of its publication- my word, the truth of it. We just keep trying to catch a dream that’s already been lost
