Q: Any recommendations for curtains to use with this? Not too long

Very lightweight cloth. You wouldn't want to be opening and closing them, the magnets aren't strong enough to withstand movement. I hang a small kitchen towel and it is fine if I don't pull.

Q: What is the clearance between the back of the rod and the door?

Unfortunately I'm not at home to measure, but I would say the magnet holds the rod about 1 inch away from the door, giving you a fair amount of space for curtains.

Q: Are you supposed to remove both the paper and plastic backing for a non-slip magnetic surface?

I did. I didn't think the magnets would be strong enough for any barriers between the rod and the door.
