Murder, She Wrote: Gin and Daggers

I can't believe it took me this long to start this awesome series-definitely will continue it!
Jessica's first book adventure took her to England to a mystery conference. She was first staying with a good author friend who was killed--someone set it up to make it look like Jessica did it. The bumbling inspector had it all over the news, Jessica's Cabot Cove friends Seth and Mort were worried, so they came over to hang out with her. With the help of a not-so-reputable private investigator, Jessica helped solve the case and the real killer was taken care of. Everyone had warned her against the PI she used, but trust Jessica to find the good in someone, so she trusted the guy--and I was happy to see he didn't let her down. He was thrilled to have worked with the famous Jessica Fletcher. I had read the most recent in this series and decided it was time to start at the beginning. I loved the show and wasn't sure how the books would be, but the author did a really nice job and now that Mr. Bain is deceased, I found out the new author does a good job as well when I read that most recent book.

Cozy Mystery Bingo Challenge
@Cozy Mystery Bingo Challenges, we're doing 'no deadline' challenge called "Murder She Wrote"...Sans bingo card...Pick a task per Episode...based on the old TV series by the same name. For Episode 1, I picked the easiest task to look up: Read a book by Jessica Fletcher. I learned that all of the books written to authenticate her reality were by a journeyman ghostwriter named Donald Bain. He's got his own Goodreads page with a long list of nom de plumes, and I think he did a bang up job for Jessica. The story moves along briskly with solid characters, leaving the impression you have been reading about this woman for years. And of course, there are none of the grammar and formatting problems of modern day publishing.I'll probably be choosing 'task 5' again...

Easy and pleasant read
I liked that this book did not require too much brainpower to read. It is the perfect antidote to a hectic workday. That is not to say it is boring! Quite the contrary…The author makes one feel a part of every scene.

Very similar to the TV series episodes
This novel has the same style and feel as the TV episodes of Murder, She Wrote.Jessica is in London to attend a convention for international mystery writers. The weekend before, she visits Ainsworth Manor, home of aging mystery writer Marjorie Ainsworth. Marjorie was a literary friend of Jessica's. There are other guests present too. During the night, Marjorie is stabbed to death in her bedroom. The body is found by Jessica who was given the guest bedroom next to Marjorie. Because Jessica was accused of killing Marjorie and because she had no faith in the village detective (a total idiot), Jessica ends up investigating the murder of her friend. Sounds just like a Murder, She Wrote episode, doesn't it? Light and fun read.

This book was written in 2000
The cover is in good shape but the pages/paper looks like it was written 50 years ago. Very aged looking. Very disappointed in that.

A bit slow, but nice. Why the romance though??
Very nice story. A bit slow around the middle, and I did sus out a few things, but a good plot twist at the end and way more people involved than I had originally thought. The ending was a bit messy, probably because it was so slow going most of the time, and everything sort of imploded at 95%.One thing though. Why did they sort of start a romance between Jessica and the Inspector? I don't remember tv show!Jessica having any romance ever (then again, my memories are old). Can't we have a female lead without feeling the need to set her up with someone, every single time?

Best in the series.........?
After reading all about the contraversy of this, the 1st book in the series was very interested to read this re-issue. Apparently some of the continuity errors were corrected, such as Jessica driving but there are still some errors. The character of Mort is terrible and what is with calling him Morton, found that really irritating. Other than that a really good read and a really good mystery, quite possibly the best in the series. No real reason for having seth and Mort in the book but still if you're a fan of Murder She Wrote then would definately recommend reading.
