Gulliver's Travels Paperback – December 21, 2020

If you are like me and prefer a smaller book with average font size then this isn't for you. Large pages with very small print. I wish I had paid more attention to the dimensions of the book. That being said, great story and book arrived on time and in perfect condition.

Was surprised to find it was in Old English format. Bought for my 10yr old grandson. He struggled through it and did not get the enjoyment from reading it, that I had hoped for.

I realize that Gulliver’s Travels is a classic, and I had fairly high expectations for it, but the novel didn’t work for me in any way, shape, or form. Where do I start? First, the novel has no shred of believability. It would have been find if Gulliver landed in Lilliput, did his thing with the Lilliputians and that was the end of it. What’s the likelihood that a single individual could land in five undiscovered places in the 18th century world? You can only suspend disbelief so much. Secondly, Brobdingnag couldn’t possibly exist. The way Gulliver describes it with the giants that live there, the land mass would have to be about as big as North America. In the 18th century, most of the world had been explored. Such an enormous land mass would have been impossible to miss.I didn’t care for the writing style at all. Swift’s prose seemed stuffy and barely readable. Gulliver is not remotely likeable. He is a snob of ridiculous proportions. Basically, if you were wealthy and born of nobility, you were a person of quality regardless of how uncivil or unpleasant a person you are. If you are of lower class, you are a miserable, despicable person, no matter how nice are good you are. The plot is ridiculous. The writing is weak. Not for Gulliver but for me. Each page must contain 2000 words spread across a wide page with hardly aby paragraphs. Small print and hard to read. Takes ten minutes to finish a page.

Big like a magazine. Not what I expected.
