Q: Is there enough alginate to do a half head cast?

1-pound of alginate is sufficient for face cast without ears. Traditionally 3-pounds of alginate are required for a full head cast.

Q: How do you get this not to clump? I've followed all the instructions.

Use a wire kitchen whisk. Slowly add (soft or distilled water) to the powder. Do not add the powder to the water as it will clump. Using the whisk stir rapidly until smooth. It Will take some vigorous stirring. For larger quantities use a mixer attached to an electric drill.

Q: How long does the molding powder take to get hard?

If you go by the directions on the package (7 cups of water to 1 cup alginate) 8-10 minutes, roughly. But if you use a 3-to-1 ratio instead, it sets in two to three minutes.

Q: Exactly how fast does this set in minutes?

Depending on the amount of water and temperature of the water. With cold water it takes about 10-12 minutes. Warm water is less time. Gotta move fast though!
