Q: Concerned how hot this seems to get on the back of the light unit.. only received it today but feel it should not get hot??

I had to send mine back as water got into it after a 2 months and I was very disappointed because this company doesn't give no warranty and thanks to Amazon I had a refund through them after I sent the light back to them.I have now purchased a Fluval Aquasky and although it was £120 it's by far a better light unit and I wish I purchased it before going for the cheaper option,it also come's with a 3 year guarantee and you can change the colours from your phone.

Q: There are three timing modes for 8, 10 and 12 hours. If the lights are left on will the timing modes run through a 24 hour cycle and repeat always?

Yes, they do repete daily once set. Also you can extend the time manually if required and it doesn't reset the timer,

Q: Is there some form of spacer to raise the light higher

In short----- no. However, you may be able to bend the metal rod sliders ( used to extend the light units length) if there is enough scope to do so on your tank? By that I mean if you purchase one of these which fits your tank when @ its max length you wont be able to.
