Panasonic does it again.
I have been using this madchine for several years now and I haven't had a minutes trouble. It gives an excellent recording on DVD or VHS. Transfer from VHS to DVD is fast and simple for non-protected media. I had hoped to record all of my VHS tapes to DVD and that just isn't going to happen. I have quite a collection of VHS tapes and was hoping to have them on a more stable media. Maybe some of you gurus know how to do this but I don't. The machine will not record an HD program. I tried and I recorded the program but no sound, picture quality was excellent.I love the machine and I would recommend it to anyone. Amazon was thee lowest price for this item.

Not quite what I expected
The remote doesn't work properly. It won't stop recording when pushed. Had to manually stop the recording several times. The dvd tray goes back in way too fast and several times it causes the dvd to jam. I knew it was used but I really expected better for the price I paid for this unit.

Good quality workhorse
I've had this machine for at least a couple years and it has performed extremely well and it is used every day. I would advise that it does seem to prefer Sony DVD's however, I had some problems with Memorex (they would stop mid-recording) which likely has more to do with the DVD's themselves. The recording feature on both VHS and DVD is simple, recording looks terrific and dubbing from one to the other is as easy as I've ever seen. Since I've been pleased with this unit, it has recently been moved to my second tv as I purchased the newer Panasonic DMR-EZ48V model as a primary. Panasonic does a nice job with these machines.

The VHS/DVD Combo Was Just Like My Old One
I was surprised and pleased to find out that this DMR-ES46 VS combo player was an exact match to my old VHS/DVD combo unit that stopped working. I thought I was just getting a DVD recorder. But all the cables I used with my old unit plugged right into the DMR-ES46 VS. The signal passed from the source machine to the DMR-ES46 VS, and it made a perfect copy of the source machine's content. It even came with a separately packaged remote control, which a lot of used products don't. Everything looked to be in pristine condition.

VCR & TUNER SUCK
Received the refurbished Panasonic Model DMR-ES46VS from Jungle Discount promptly. Packaging was poor so case took a couple of dents. The VCR section of this unit will NOT play a tape made on any other machine. Oddball speeds and overall poor quality picture. Interference cannot be taken out by manual or automatic tracking. Closed captions are garbled. If you are thinking of using this unit to convert VHS tapes to DVD, PLEASE SAVE YOUR MONEY! Even brand new tapes recorded at SP jump all around. Tuner gives a very poor quality picture. The DVD section is very good. Manual covers a lot and is written at "power user" level. The unit has so many features that you will have to almost memorize the book because the most common usage is hidden. Poor writing and organization.

Almost perfect
If all you want is great picture quality, get this model. The HDMI upconversion is great and it does it with the VHS also. I really liked the flex recording feature which allows you to specify any recording lenght and it will record the best quality for that disc time. I just wish it was more complete. It records DL DVD but not continuously. You have to close the 1st layer before recording to the 2nd layer, which makes it not very good in the way of a dual layer recorder. Now this might be a bit nit-picky but this unit won't display the remaining time while playing a regular DVD video or give give you the total disc time. I just like to know how late I'll be staying up. Also the ES46VS has no eject button on the remote, no direct way of turning on the subtitles without having to go through a menu series, it will only accept SD cards, and there are no component inputs for recording. I returned my unit and will wait until Panasonic offers these simple fixes in a $300 device.

If you're converting VHS to DVD, you better work fast
...because the lifespan of this unit is amazingly short. Plays DVDs and VHS tapes fine and recording (and copying) is fairly easy. Still, it was less than a year before I got an error code on the front panel. I had to send the unit to Panasonic for a $130 flat-rate repair (they replaced the DVD drive, which I found was a pretty common issue with this model). It worked fine for another few months, and now I have an F03 code. Don't know what it is* and don't care; I've had it with this thing. I really need to get my VHS tapes converted over and then I can be finished with this whole fiasco. Until, that is, I have to convert my DVDs to Blu-ray, and then Blu-ray to holocube, and then holocube to brain chip...*Evidently F03 is the code for "Imperial Stormtroopers in the VHS slot." Easy fix, but still.
