Q: Is there a zipper front or elastic waist?

Both. There is a front zipper. The waistband is stretch fabric on the outside and wide elastic facing on the inside. It does not have a casing with elastic. The waist band stretches, but not nearly as much as a waistband with an elastic casing like the kind sweat pants have.

Q: Is the front pocket deep enough to hold a cell phone

It will just barely hold a phone 5.5 x 2.8 inches (including case) slid in sideways. Most women gripe about the small or no pockets in their pants.

Q: What is the difference between a 20w and a 20w/medium...what is medium?

I don't think "medium" actually has anything to do with size. In terms of fit, Lee's 20w is a standard 20w for a 49 1/2" - 51" hip. My guess is "medium" stands for the rise (crotch to waist band height. Low rise would be pants with a waist band below the belly button and designated as "low" or "low rise". Medium rise would be slightly above the belly button, but not quite to the actual waist. That's how my capris fit anyway.
