Q: Does this work on Windows 8 x64?

It works fine for me on Windows 8.1 x64 and Windows 10 x64 (multiple machines).It works best if you run it disc-less (Blizzard has instructions on which files to copy from the disc.)Also, move it out of Program Files/Program Files (x86) and put it somewhere like C:\Starcraft. This is important for the "broken menu" issues.

Q: Does this works on Mac (Mavericks)?

No. The most recent version of OSX it can be installed on is 10.6, Snow Leopard. It will not work on 10.7 above.

Yes, there is a digital download of this on the Battle.net client and website. As a matter of fact, Blizzard recently made this game and expansion digitally FREE as of April 19, 2016, in celebration for the anniversary remake that was announced. To all of those thinking of purchasing StarCraft Battle Chest at this point, don't, unless if you want it for collector's purpose or to have physicals, since the game is officially digital free.
