This is a solid aluminum product that should last a long time.
This chair base is made from an aluminum alloy that is strong and should last a very long time. Being aluminum it will never rust or corrode. It is also very light weight. It comes in a large box that actually weighs more than the base inside it.I have not set it up yet since I need a new gas-lift cylinder.

If you're upgrading the wheels, upgrade the base, too!
I have an old office chair, that I have repaired and upgraded in several ways. The chair is approx 15yrs old. Use it every day for multiple hours. The original wheels (typical wide plastic double casters) were getting sluggish, so I decided to upgrade to some actual wheels. They are great, larger wheels, smoother rolling, raises the chair a bit.BUT ... they also increases the shearing force the base's wheel shaft housings can be subjected to. When you happen to want to move the chair perpendicular to the way a wheel happens to be facing, the wheel will try to lay over until it turns and start rolling in the desired direction. Sure enough, after about a month, one of the wheels ripped right out, blowing out the housing.Duramont to the reasonably priced rescue. $40 sure beats buying a new chair. The wheel shafts and lift pillar are all standard sizes so replacement was pretty easy, though it does take force to squeeze in the wheels, and a hammer to knock off the old base.So far, so good, the aluminum if taking he abuse fine, and I appreciate the ridges on the bases spokes making it easier to rest a foot on.
