Worth the splurge once a year
I bought the small Eight Treasures cake and while it differed somewhat in appearance from the nian gao I used to buy in Beijing, it was close enough to satisfy my Spring Festival nostalgia. In China I was taught to slice it, dip it in a batter made of cornstarch and water, fry it and serve it with sugar. I added some American characteristics by dipping it in egg and topping it with maple syrup--best of both worlds! Rather shockingly pricey, but this purchase saved me the trouble of making the small amount I will consume.
