Q: I am looking to replace my incomplete craftsman socket set. Would these Pass thru sockets (1/4, 3/8, 1/2) totally replace shallow/deep socket sets?

Craftsman, Crescent and GearWrench share the same spline-drive so fit each others' ratchets. The other style sold under Kobalt, Pittsburgh, Bostitch etc. uses 6-point hex drive ratchets and they all interchange between themselves, but they are not compatible with these spline drive type. Be careful when looking at these sets, as some use "universal" socket sizes, which claim to fit a metric and SAE and square, hex or Torx with one socket; that may be true, but it does damage the bolt. The six-point hex is what I prefer.As to whether it will replace standard sockets, not really. It has a place alongside for really deep needs or also for short access height, but the ratchet is much bigger diameter around the socket than a standard square drive ratchet would be so it doesn't get down into places where a deep socket can go. I like having both, I don't think either one is completely replaced by the other.

Q: How many teeth are on this ratchet?

To be perfectly honest we have not taken one apart but according to Gearwrench the pass thru ratchet has 72 teeth , hope it was a little helpful

Q: How do I get the socket out of the wrench?!

If you're using the sockets from the Gearwrench set, just push the socket with your thumb from the top. If you're using the adapter to handle regular sockets and have a problem removing it, just tap on it with a small hammer on the bottom of the adapter to remove it.

Q: can the top piece be removed for storage in a tool chest

Not unless you cut the hinge, I work in the mountains so I keep mine in a tool bag.
