Update: Yes, you can use your 3DS as a controller for the Wii U, but you must have a copy of the game as well.--- Original Response ---Edit: This answer was originally posted early September before the 3DS controller feature was announced by Nintendo.This may be a vague answer, but it seems there will be some sort of interaction between the 3DS and the Wii U. Nintendo recently distributed codes for a Smash Bros demo to Club Nintendo Platinum members. This demo revealed a feature with a picture of the Wii U console, and states "Connect Smash Bros on Wii U" (source: I've personally played this demo, but this feature was grayed out for the demo, so I can't verify how it works).A GameSpot article by Justin Haywald further claims that "You'll be able to use your 3DS as a Smash Bros. controller on Wii U."So in a way, if this connect feature really does enable the 3DS to act as a controller, it'd possible that you could. But it may only be local play (this is pure conjecture).
