Q: Is the fine mesh filter really necessary?

It is. I ordered the filter from a different offer, but without the micro filter. The filter will not lock into place without the mesh filter because the plastic ring to which the fine mesh is attached is necessary to obtain a proper seal of the main filter. The main filter assembly will not twist into place without having that plastic ring of the mesh filter.
