Works well

My gas water heater is a crappy Rheem low NOx with motorized damper valve unit that only works well when there is a strong flue draft or when the water heater has been running and the flue is warm. If it were not for a local gas company rebate i would not have gotten this unreliable low NOx version. However, this draft inducer fan makes the gas heater run more reliably and the heater does not fault out and throw error codes as much, and it is about an order of magnitude more reliable than before. This fan did the trick. I used a generous amount of high temp heat duct aluminum foil tape to seal the pipe around and after the fan to make sure exhaust gases are not coming into the house. The fan makes some noise and a little bit of vibration, but it is acceptable and inline with my expectations. I put in a breakbean IR sensor on the motorized damper valve with a relay to only turn on the draft inducer fan when the damper is open. Its been working well for a year now so far.

WELL DESIGNED, WELL BUILT, LONG LASTING

Bought this unit as backup for a twenty plus year old unit in a woodstove flue pipe. Old unit removed two or three times a year and creosote removed. Motor getting tired and getting hard to restart. Decided to install new unit and move old unit to backup.Old unit installed securely with four corner screws, three side screws, and two top screws. New unit - only four (now much smaller) corner screws. Enlarged four corner holes to work with old unit corner screws. Drilled 5 new holes for three side screws and two top screws. Now installed in place of old unit. Other than mounting holes, new unit seems identical to old, twenty plus year old unit. Now securely installed and running perfectly. Well designed, well constructed unit. Solid Scandinavian (most likely Dansk!). Great device for wood stove with poor natural draft.

Good product but...

The good: The draft inducer works great. We bought it to help with a smoke problem in our newly built coal fired forge. The inducer works great! We were a little skeptical about its ability to move enough air to be effective. It turns out to have plenty of volume. The installation was a little tricky but the wiring was a piece of cake. I wish it would come with all the hardware. Missing was a conduit clamp that you have to use to keep the incoming conduit from getting cut over time. The bad: Well, it really isn't all that bad. Just annoying. The problem is in the template. You have to be VERY careful when applying the template to the exhaust tube or it will not line up square which causes the mounting holes to be off just enough to be problematic.Once the hole is cut out in that case, it can't really be easily fixed properly. We wound up replacing one piece of the exhaust tube. Luckily I had made a copy of the template just in case.Overall thought this is a good product.Hopefully it will last for the long haul.

Installing (only) Tjernlund DJ-3 with some notes

I just finished installing and testing for few hours, and I thought I will write down some notes about this draft inducer. My water heater is an "orphaned water heater" (type these words in Google and you will see some sites with good info). The first picture shows the rust on the top of my water heater due to backflow that happens in windy days :o(The inducer is well made, and comes as pictured. You will need to wire to plug in (I used an old desktop power cord). Inside the package, there is a template to be used (as a sticker) to make the appropriate cut in the duct and make the 4 holes to attach the inducer. It also contained 4 small bolts with metal clips (like those in cars called u-clips or panel clips) that go over the metal duct and has a thread to secure the screws. The owner manual says that can be installed from 3-6 inches duct. Yet, it will not fit well for 3 inches. Mine was 3 inches, and I used a drill bit to make the starting point, and a jigsaw with a metal blade to make the cuts. Once I made the cuts, I realized that there is no way for the lateral flaps to stay over the duct without bending it (this could cause a serious leak). Also, I should have waited to make the holes until the inducer is mounted on the vent duct. The holes did not align up in this attempt. So, I went to a closest hardware store, bought 4 inches duct and 2 pieces of adapters (3 to 4 inches). To make new cuts, got a Tjernlund specification pdf file on the web to get the size of the hole, make a simple template on paper, and restarted. Once it was mounted nicely, I made the holes, put the clips. And discover that 2 of the 4 bolts do not have clearance to use a nut or screwdriver to tighten. A bad design. I ended up using a needle plier to tighten.Although this product description in Amazon seems to indicate that you can control the speed with Vary-Draft control, there is nothing in the box to do it. So, it is a single speed as it comes (I think there is a more expensive package that includes few other things but it's 3-4 times more expensive). You plug in and it runs. To avoid this little motor to run all the time, I bought a "Century 7 Day Heavy Duty Digital Programmable Timer - Dual Outlet" here in Amazon. It allows you to program up to 8 on-offs a day. I have programmed 3 on-offs in weekdays and on weekends in slightly different times. The 2nd and 3rd pic shows both sides of the installation. The screws on the motor side are the ones without enough clearance for a screwdriver. The little zip ties and wire on the motor were used while I was installing the duct with the mounted draft inducer (since the weight tend to turn the duct). It allowed me to maintain the level for the motor as the user manual specifies while I was using some screws to secure the vent. The last pic is the timer that controls when the motor will be running. It is not a perfect solution, but simple enough for us that we have a regular schedule during the week with work and school. I have posted 4 pictures, so I hope that it will eventually show up.I hope that this helps a little.

Just what we needed

We have an outdoor fireplace and the way the flue was designed there was no up draft. All the smoke would come out the front opening. The flue pipe is on the outside of the wall. The draft inducer is not waterproof, so I had to make a cover for the unit. Now we have an operational fireplace.

This little beauty is amazing!

No more smoke filling my basement when I light up my woodstove cold. I used to be plagued by this problem. I'd open my woodstove door and I could feel that cold draft blowing down my chimney and unless I could get my stove hot fast my basement would fill with smoke and I'd have to open the windows. Not fun when you live in northern Canada and it's -30°C outside. This unit came with a cutout template for my stovepipe that helped with an easy installation. I am very please with this. Hands down one of the best investments I could have done for my wonderful woodstove life.
