Winning the West - 1st Step
About half way into this fine book you will find:"SPECIAL ORDERS, ~ U.S. GUNBOAT TYLER, No. 3. Paducah, February 2, 1862. Lieutenant-Commanding Phelps will, as soon as the fort shall have surrendered and upon signal from the flagship, proceed with the Conestoga, Tyler, and Lexington up the river to the railroad bridge crosses, and, if the army shall not already have got possession, he will destroy so much of the track as will entirely prevent its use by the rebels. He will then proceed as far up the river as the stage of water will admit and capture the enemy's gunboats and other vessels which might prove available to the enemy. A.H. FOOTE, Flag-Officer, Comdg. Naval Forces, Western Waters""...as far up the river as the stage of water will admit..." turned out to be 135 miles to the town of Florence, in Alabama. This is the key to Grant's stragety - to plunge a digger into the western half of the Confederacy via the rivers. This book is well written, clear and concise. The ebook edition makes excellent use of the capability offered by HTML, linking to maps on internet web pages and connecting footnotes to the notes at the back of the book and allowing easy return to the main text.

Missing 33 pages
This book is great... until you get to page 32 and discover that the next page is number 65... and the missing 33 are not somewhere else in the book. Why did all of the other 4 reviewers fail to MENTION THIS??? If the remaining pages are supplied I will delete this comment and rewrite it. Unbelievable!!
