Mayhew Pro 66475 Carded Hard Cap Nail Set, 3-Piece
G**Y
Good but flawed
I really wanted to like these, and in a way I do but they need improvement. I was under the impression a set like this could counter sink finish nails up to 2 1/2" 15 gauge. I use those often along with 18 gauge nails. I think this set could be excellent, if purchased at under fifteen bills - but ONLY if you use small nails. You need a different set if you use 15-16 gauge finish nails because this set just isn't up to the task if you use your tools regularly. Make a 4/32" model that I can buy separately in this style and that might solve the problem!First the good part. These are made in USA - something that may not mean anything to some people but I purchase USA made whenever possible, as long as the quality is there! The hard cap is an excellent idea. It reduces noise, lessens the risk hitting one of your fingers as you tap the nails in with your hammer, adds comfort with the cushion grip and even looks good as well. Now the bad... The point on these seem unusually small. The smallest one looks more like a scratch awl point than a nail set. They are so small in fact that I find myself using only the largest (3/32") one. Even that one seems too small for for finish nails up to 2 1/2" 15 gauge which is what I use most often. If I had to take a guess I'd say I probably tapped in maybe 50-60 nails so far of various sizes, mostly the 15 gauge ones however. The tip durability honestly doesn't seem noticeably better than other brands I have tried. It has started to deform slightly, which I highly suspect is because it is only meant for 18 gauge nails...MAYBE the occasional 16 gauge. HOWEVER, if you were using the 3/32" nail set to only sink small nails I think it would hold up fine. This set however is not meant for sinking 15 or even 16 gauge finish nails. By their sizing, Mayhew needs to introduce a version which is 4/32" as like I said, the points on this set are simply too small. I can't even imagine when I would use the 1/32" nail set unless I started using extremely tiny nails.Mayhew - If you read this, increase the size of the nail set heads or at least offer a 4/32" version!Other thoughts: This is the smallest point nail set I have ever seen. Those sold by sears under the Craftsman brand have bigger points (even in the same "size" description) and they come with a lifetime warranty. I don't buy a whole lot of craftsman these days, but if you are looking for some USA made nail sets that are large enough for trim work, I'd suggest those. Sure they don't have the cushion grip or hard cap - which I love by the way, but what's the point if they end up sitting in your box because you can't use them, or the tip deforms because the nails you have used them on are too large for it to handle?

Misbranded
These aren't even Mayhew, the reason I ordered them.

Love these.
High quality. Great for centering a drill for accurate holes.
