Beautiful and Captivating.
The beauty of this book lies in its simplicity. A simple plot (winter is coming) with simple characters (sweet woodland creatures) create a charming story. The illustrations are realistic, but not too realistic for a child - there is a softness, a roundness to them that makes them "cute" too. I like that the authors didn't automatically assume that realism is boring to children - on the contrary, it can be fascinating, and is an almost forgotton element in todays children's literature. I read this when I was a little child, and, 20 years later when I looked at it again, it was like coming home. Please buy this book for your children or grandchildren. They'll be happy you did!

Easy to see why it won the Medal!
I love sharing this book with elementary school students during the winter as it gives a great description and pictures of what the animals do to prepare and make it through the winter. I usually read this book along with "White Snow Bright Snow" as examples of books that, although older, continue to entertain and teach in a fun way. I point out that they can probably tell why these books were selected for the Caldecott Medal. (and of course, ask what the medal is given for?) I always ask the children can they tell by the artwork that the books are old? Of course, they can. But the events depicted, don't change, kind of like in the song "The Circle of Life".!!

Beautiful pictures and story. A favorite.
Beautiful realistic pictures and story. One of my favorite kids books since my first child was born in the late 70's. A book I didn't mind reading every day. I've bought several for my children, baby gifts, and grandchildren.

Lovely tale of an elderly couple feeding the forest folk during a big snowstorm
I reread this sweet book again after a snow and ice storm and enjoyed it as much as ever, especially as we had our own deer come close to the house and feed on bird seed..

fast shipping! Book arrived as promised in excellent condition.
This is a beautiful book. Read it with a child and help them understand how the animals survive in the harsh winter environment of the northern states. Explains why some animals hibernate, others migrate and some manage to find food and survive the winter.
