Nightwing Vol. 3: Nightwing Must Die (Rebirth)

The people who would most enjoy reading this are the folks who read Grant Morrison's Batman and Robin which took place right before the New 52 started. This book makes a lot of callbacks to that series.Story: I knew Seeley was already writing one of Rebirth's best books. On the back cover it clearly states that this book makes callbacks to a series I never read. I wasn't sure how much I would enjoy this, but after having read it, Seeley did such an amazing job with plot, and especially dialogue. Everyone sounds like they should, especially Damien. Fans of the animated movies will find that Damien speaks almost exactly like that in this book. Nightwing is doing his usual thing around Bludhaven and he gets a voicemail from his new girlfriend, Shawn Tsang, where she states, "I'm late". Meanwhile, Damien feels as though Dick is trying to take away his legacy of ascending to the mantle of Batman, so he heads to Bludhaven to confront Nightwing. Dick dismisses Damien and rushes back to Shawn's apartment to find that she's been kidnapped and one of her paintings has "Daddy" written in red paint. Nightwing and Damien decide to team up, like old times, with Damien even stealing their old Batmobile from the cave. They travel to Paris, do battle with Deathwing, and someone made up to be Robin like Damien. These two copies seem to know everything Dick and Damien know. After subduing them, they come across one of the masterminds behind Shawn's kidnapping, Professor Pyg! After a big battle, Pyg reveals that he was just following the voice in his head. Robin is captured by Deathwing and taken away. Dick and Shawn are able to track him to Egypt, if I remember right. There, they encounter Deathwing again and the real mastermind behind all of this. Someone who Dick has dealt with in the past, and someone who wants to make Nightwing suffer. No, of coarse I'm not going to say who it is, but I believe it's this person's debut in this continuity, although the book hints that Dick's time as Batman has already occurred in the New 52 timeline. So, this is the first time we're actually seeing this person since the New 52 launched. Dick becomes trapped in his own mind, and must come to understand a great truth about himself to be free. In all of this, Deathwing is able to come to his senses and realizes that the bad guy transformed him into something he didn't want to be. I still have no idea what actually happened to them in the end, but Nightwing, Shawn, and Robin make a hasty retreat as this temple comes down over them! After they make it back to Bludhaven, Shawn reveals that she's not pregnant. Sooooo, no daddy time for Dick. As Damien is about to head back to San Francisco, they decide to beat up some bad guys together for old times' sake, and Damien declares they're still the best! Hell yeah! It was interesting to see Dick kinda freak out over possibly becoming a dad. I really liked the story elements of Dick realizing the ultimate truth about himself. The last issue is sort of a one shot. It's a team up between Nightwing and Wally, written by Michael McMillian. Dick and Wally just hang out for a guys night, but then they notice that a bunch of peoples' stuff is gone. Just instantly disappearing. Wally is able to detect a change in time using the Speed Force, and they track this rookie criminal who's pausing time to steal people's valuables. Wally and Dick almost die in the effort to stop him, but another great truth about Nightwing is that his friendships are so strong that he'd sacrifice it all for his loved ones. It's eventually revealed that the vest that allowed "Timebomb" to pause time came from an old Gotham enemy, someone from Dick's time as Batman. Seems as though Seeley is pulling from all Batman sources right before the New 52. Morrison and Snyder's work is referenced.Art: I'm so glad to see a Rebirth book where the main arc is all done by one artist. Javier Fernandez is the better of the two artists on this book in my opinion, so it's great to see this whole major arc get drawn by such a talent! I probably underestimated his skill with facial expressions, but some panels really surprised me. The artist on the final issue, who's name I can't remember, also did a fine job with a complementary style that works well with Fernandez. I love Sotomayor's coloring. I absolutely LOVE the blue of Nightwing's costume. It goes so well with the black and the neon signs of Bludhaven (which also looks fantastically penciled and colored). This is a beautiful and colorful book to look at, considering it's part of the bat family of titles.Overall: It would have been beneficial for me to have read Morrison's Batman and Robin, but this book was still very enjoyable. I knew enough about all the characters that I could still enjoy it. This book has a good wit about it, not only in plot, and the callbacks, but the humor as well. There were several laugh out loud moments for me, and that's pretty appropriate for a Nightwing book. With a more grounded approach for a bat family book, the chance to use lesser known villains, and fantastic art and color, Nightwing is really one of the Rebirth books that deserves to be read by everyone. Don't pass on this.

There's some decent writing between Nightwing & his girlfriend Defacer but the story jumps around too much with its villains & kinda moves too fast for anything truly interesting to really build up. Overall it was never boring or bad at all, but definitely a little disappointing. I'd give it like a 6.5 or a 7 out of 10.

Part of a colection I would advise starting from volume 1

This arc of Nightwing is pretty interesting with elements and characters from Grant Morrison's Batman and Robin from 7-6 years ago and last issue is pretty single arc with Wally West Flash, I enjoyed it and it also a good starting point
