Recent research indicates that the best blend for preventing (and even sometimes somewhat reversing) age-related macular degeneration is a blend with at least as much meso-zeaxanthin as lutein. Such a blend is currently hard to find, even though meso-zeaxanthin is reportedly cheap to manufacture, compared to the other ingredients. The supplement makers simply haven't yet responded to the research.One study I saw compared three blends, and the one with the most meso-zeaxanthin offered the greatest benefit to those with early stages of age-related macular degeneration. I'm taking it to try to stave off the onset of this (i.e., I have not been diagnosed yet but it runs in the family, so I'm trying to be pro-active). Another study that I just saw today said that this specific blend (MacuSafe/MacuGuard) improved the vision of people with good eyesight, so there's an indication that this might help everyone.Note that, according to this latest study, the levels build up slowly over time. Participants took one a day, and after 6 months, their ability to distinguish between stationary and moving objects was improved (something that will help drivers). The conclusion of the researchers was that these supplements helped people beyond the established role of preventing/slowing macular degeneration.I took off one star because I ordered the 90 softgels and got capsules. As of mid-July, 2016, the picture is of a container of capsules but the description quite definitely is of softgels. The capsules have a taste - not a horrible one, but a distinct one.
