The Witches

Took exactly 17 days to arrive (not complaining) and case was cracked but disc was brand new

Despite other people not liking this movie, I love it! It’s the same story with a new twist.

First off, the region free bluray disc did work fine in 3 of my bluray players (different brands). At first it didn't work in my main one and I felt ripped off (which is why I took it and tried it in my other two players, where it worked fine), but it turned out the HDMI cord was partly loose on my main one. Once I fixed that, no problems. ;)The movie itself.... If they had stayed true to the book, I would have really liked it. I think they got a really good cast for this, and the graphics were wonderful compared to the older film. I am longtime fan of the book, though, and I think some of the additions they made were just plain weird (like what Anne Hathaway does with her arms near the end--what's up with that??? if you've seen it, you'll know what I mean).Unlike some other reviewers, I did not find any problems with the grandma's health problems or thought they had too much drama. The grandma did have health problems in the book, and they have not made a mountain out of a mole hill. It's just a fact, and it's a fact of life. And anyone familiar with Roald Dahl's books knows that he didn't feel the need to make his stories are warm and fuzzy and easily digestible. They're more like the original Grimm's fairy tales, which can get rather, well, grim. ;)The movie gets 6/10 stars from me, which I've translated to 3/5 stars on here. But the bluray did work, and that's important to know, since they did not make a US version on bluray.

Somewhat complicated

This was a sorry movie. . Some movies can’t be remade, especially when the original one was such a good movie.

I loved Roald Dahl when I was younger. It is his book “The Witches” that the movie is based on. I was excited for the release, until I watched the movie. It is NOT for young children.The story line between the boy and his grandmother is very sweet. I thought the plot was fine, but the CGI images - especially the High Witch - are frightening. They scared ME and I’m a grown adult. This movie is NOT for small children. In fact, I think it should be rated PG-13 for the fear inducing scenes of the High Witch.When the High Witch is alone with the other witches she reveals her true self which includes a mouth with razor sharp teeth that opens from ear to ear, a scabbed bald head with worms crawling out, and deformed hands and feet (very frightening for children). This movie says it’s “comedy/fantasy” but they should include “horror” too.In one scene when the witch is trying to catch the mice, her arms extend through a wall vent and grow in jolting spurts at strange angles. I think the movie is better described as a “dark comedy” and appropriate for only older children.Viewer beware.

The movie was great until the end. It was a little disappointing. The actors were awesome, but my daughter and I thought it was going to be like the original.

Classic

Only reason I didn't give it 5 stars is we did not have time to watch it at Christmas. Daughter loves movie and has been looking for it for years. Looks great shipping timely

Not as bad as some critics would sayit is. Saying that, it doesn’t have thescare factor of the 1990 version andthe transformations are a bit too fastand ‘painless’ as it were, consideringwhat happens to the two boys shouldbe a terrifying prospect for kids. Thecast are good, though, and design ofthe production is nice. Would watch itmore than once.

I wanted the original and as there was a allot of mixed reviews I didnt know what I would recieve, but this is the original that I wanted , such a good price!!

Can't beat the original but on its own this is still a good film enhanced by being on blu ray
