Q: Why are all the jobs held by boys? Can't girls do these jobs? I see they have a girl puppet but predictably she is a princess.

I think that the Jolly Helpers are gender neutral, the child or adult storyteller has the opportunity to assign their gender, should they feel this necessary to play. The important career choices of the Jolly Helpers are presented without referencing gender identity. A surgeon of any gender would wear scrubs and in a cap. Firefighters and Bus Drivers wear uniforms that include hats regardless of gender. The construction worker is wearing a safety helmet and an orange safety vest, responsible choices for the work. I do agree that the princess puppet is adhering to a traditional gender stereotype of "girl" by wearing both long hair down and a dress, but I don't think real life surgeons, construction workers, bus drivers, nor firefighters need to wear dresses and long hair (and work with it down) to be women (or girls). I am uncomfortable with the idea that these workers, presented in the safe and appropriate attire of their work would be presumed to be boys. I have carried them in my store for most of this year and seen them everyday and it had not occurred to me that they were boys or girls or needed to be.
