Garmin GPS Foretrex 601

Pacco ben imballato, Garmin nuovo, messe le batterie AAA (il senso delle batterie è stampigliato sulle pareti del vano) iniziato ad impostare il tutto. Le istruzioni sono anche in Italiano, un cavetto usb, ho creato il profilo su Garmin e scaricato un aggiornamento, per altro rapidissimo nello scambio dati tra Pc e 601. Prova in montagna e navigazione libera, spettacolo!! Consigliatissimo

Lost my old Garmin due to wrist band breaking. Pretty familiar with these. Use them mainily for military trainings. Pretty convenient and time saver.

I have used the Garmin Foretrex 401 for years. I am a huge advocate for this product because of how quickly it receives a signal, the adaptability to your specific needs or wants, and the functionality of the basic info. I spent months trying to decide if it was worth replacing my 401 with the 601 and honestly couldn't find a review to help me make the decision with confidence. It seemed as thought pros or cons mentioned weren't that meaningful and it just came down to either wanting something new or not. I will say that the differences, as few as they are, made it well worth it for me. Listed belowPros: The ability to link to a cell phone through the Garmin app, and have others track your location Phone sync (bluetooth) for message alert, etc.Cons: NoneNeutral: Screen size Functions (almost the exact same as 401)Yes, the functions appear to be a mirror image of the 401, and until you get into the "guts" of a few of the setting you will notice almost zero difference. Certainly the screen is larger which I think can be oversold because to some people like myself that was not seen as a negative with the 401. I am actually glad the screens and functions are almost identical because that is exactly why I used the 401 religiously for years. However, I am truly surprised that more people do not talk about the phone and app capabilities more. These give the user an ability to accomplish some very important things for safety and convenience. I don't want to be on my cell phone when hiking but like having the ability to be notified if someone is trying to reach me so I can decide if it's worth getting my phone out of my pack. The app allows me to be tracked which brings a safety feature for family or friends that isn't possible with the 401. Obviously if those two capabilities are not needed for you, then the 401 is perfectly fine. For me, this was worth the purchase because of that.

As a long-time user of the 401, I bought this 601 to replace the 401 which got stolen out of my luggage a few months ago. Foretrex is the only line of GPSs on the market that do the job for me when I'm hiking or dog sledding in extreme winter conditions. The physical buttons mean I can operate it with mitts on, and its AAA batteries can be quickly replaced after the cold swiftly kills them. I've operated the 401 in temperatures as cold as -38°C/-36°F -- way below the rated -20°C minimum -- without issue.The biggest upgrade that the 601 provides is the greatly improved battery life -- ICs have gotten a heck of lot more power-efficient since the 401 hit the market. The way I burn through lithium batteries with these things, that alone will pay for the cost of the unit within its lifetime. The improved screen resolution and GLONASS/Galileo support are nice too, I guess, but no big deal to me.The 401's USB interface was persnickety and I had a lot of trouble getting it to work with modern PCs. The 601 seems to have fixed that. It presents itself as a USB mass storage device containing a filesystem full of GPX files, so you don't strictly need to use Garmin software to work with it. From my Linux system (unsupported by Garmin), I was able to populate the Foretrex with waypoints from a database of mountain peaks by copying a hand-written GPX file to GARMIN/GPX/WPTS.GPX on the Foretrex filesystem.I dislike the new removable band; it feels cheap and it's not as comfortable as the old one. It's annoying having to remove it to access the battery compartment and USB port. Reading between the lines on Garmin's product page, I believe there's some legislative nonsense driving some of this: since the band is made in China, the Berry Amendment (Google it) requires that units sold the US military come without it. So Garmin probably had to make some compromises to make it simple to attach your own band.In the couple days I've had the 601, the only issue mentioned in Bigfoot's one-star review which I've so far been able to reproduce is the missing satellite-accuracy display. I'll take his word for it on the reduced list of waypoint icons but I haven't missed any. The maximum I've seen my elevation drift off is about 60 feet, over several hours, which is comparable to what I got from the 401.

Ich habe mir das Foretrex als Ersatz für mein altes gelbes Etrex der ersten Generation gekauft.Da ich viel mit meiner Mauleselin (als Packtier) in unwegsamen Gelände unterwegs bin, brauche ich ein kleines robustes und wasserdichtes GPS, dass mir die Richtung zum nächsten gespeicherten Routenpunkt sicher anzeigt. Der eingebaute elektronische Kompass dreht mir die Windrose genau so wie ich es mir vorstelle, ich muss mich dazu nicht mehr bewegen, wie es mit dem alten Etrex ohne Kompass notwendig war. Der nächste Routenpunkt wird als Pfeil im Display angezeigt! Datenfelder für Distanz und die eigene Geschwindigkeite können zusätzlich zur Kompassrose ausgewählt werden.Der Empfang vom GPS ist überragend gut und ich habe selbst in dichten Wäldern keine Datenverluste auf den Tracks. Dem Gerät ist es egal, ob ich noch einen Ärmel drüber ziehe oder eine Jacke anhabe, es empfängt immer und zu jeder Zeit. Sollte das Gerät einmal längere Zeit ausgeschaltet sein - der erste Fix ist in ein paar Sekunden da!Falls ich mich mal verlaufe, sollte es mich auf der gleichen Strecke zurück führen können. Dazu müssen die Tracks sehr genau sein - mit 10.000 Punkten können bei einem Abstand von 10 Metern zwischen den Punkten 100 Kilometer aufgezeichnet werden. Das ist weiter als meine längste geplantete Tagestour mit dem Tier. Lange Akkulaufzeit und die Verwendung von handelsüblichen Batterien waren auch mir wichtig - beides wird vom Gerät erfüllt. Wenn die Batterien schnell genug gewechselt werden, bleibt sogar das Gedächtnis erhalten :-)Je nachdem, welche Karten auf Papier ich nutze, kann das enstprechende Koordinatensystem zur direkten Anzeige gewählt werden, ein mühsames manuelles Umrechnen entfällt.Der einzige Kritikpunkt, den ich aufführen kann ist das miese Armband. Auch andere Armbänder aus dem Programm von Garmin sind für dieses Gerät nicht empfehlenswert. Ich habe mir ein Zulu-Nato-Strap mit 28mm Breite geholt und das GPS sitzt wie eine Uhr bombenfest. Zusätzlich gibt es noch Pouches, mit denen das Garmin abgedeckt und geschützt werden kann.Updates und Datenaustausch sind über ein USB-Kabel mittel BaseCamp, MapSource und Garmin Express leicht möglich. Das Andriod-Handy wird über die Garmin-Connect-App an die Garmin-Dienste angebunden - brauche ich nicht, aber es scheint ganz nett zu funktionieren.Das Backlight ist genial hell, kann aber im Menü abgedunkelt werden! Das Display ist sehr kontrastreich und gestochen scharf. Die Oberfläche soll sehr kratzfest sein. Ich habe aber eine Schutzfolie drauf gemacht - sicher ist sicher!Alles in allem ein nettes aber teures Spielzeug, dessen Funktion auf das Mindestmass beschränkt wurde. Es kann alles was ich brauche und wenn es wieder solange wie mein altes Etrex hält, ist es jeden Cent wert!
