They do not lock but there are a couple of little caps to set the wheels in to keep it still.

Q: Have you found soft liners that fit the shelves? The ones I bought are too small.

I bought one at WalMart that is a little too long, but I lay it on the shelf and let the extra length run up the back of the cage. They seem to like it that way, to rest against. There is also one at TSC that you might try, I am going to get one of those next time. These are both nice and soft. I really like this cage, and my 3, 9 mo. kittens, are only locked in at night. They are free to go in and out of it during the day, and they do. I also have a small, 2 compartment, condo with scratcher in the bottom left, litter pan on the right. Bought the litter pan at TSC because it is larger and has high sides. The kittens come in, jump on the condo, and up on the second shelf onto the bed. Water bowl and feeding dishes on the top shelf. Plenty of exercise jumping around on the shelves when I feed them on the top shelf. Sorry this is so long, but thought it might be helpful as to how I use the cage.

Q: Will tier hold a heavy adult cat?

I run a cat shelter out of my home and I love this cage! It easily holds most adult cats. I like the suggestion of Carroll B. to add ties on the perches. They do rattle when cats jump up.

Q: What is the vertical distance between shelves? I want to get some ramps from a different source that are 21" long but don't know if they'll fit this.

I wouldn't advise using ramps, as the incline would be really steep as the horizontal distance is only about 18". Additionally, the distance from the top to the middle shelf is 21", from the middle to the bottom is 23". I hung hammocks between each level which allows the cats to traverse up 5 different levels instead of 3 and works great. If you send an email address I'll send you a photo. CindyDiver@aol.com
