Q: What are the physical dimensions of this vise? Width, height, depth front to back open.

The overall length is right about 10". The jaws are 6 3/4" wide and 3 1/2" high. It opens just over 7". I added some hard wood inserts,so I lost about 1" from the opening.

Q: Does this vise have a dog extention or not? Some reviews say yes, some say no.

I purchased two several months ago that came without dogs. The boxes were marked as 38-736 but there were not as pictured or describe in that mine were blue and had no dogs. I made it work for me rather than return them.

Q: Can this hold a piece of wood 9" thick?

I have hard red oak inside mine for jaws and when fully open I can get a 4" piece in there. Without the hardwood jaws about 6" so no, it won't hold anything with a 9" thickness. I also wish I had spent a bit more and purchased a vise with a quick release however for my needs this vise has sufficed

Q: Can you separate the screw from the front and back plate to have access to just the handle and screw?

You can, though not suggested. It is held by two pins at each end, but careful taking them out since they are brittle and might break.
