The Aeneid

i've been using this text to help my students translate the aeneid from virgil's original version and it's been widely appreciated by all!

I had to buy this whole thing for a school assignment but I'll read the whole thing eventually. The translation was pretty good and the footnotes added very helpful context.

Just so there’s no misunderstanding, and because Amazon sometimes mixes up the reviews, this is about the Kindle edition of the second (2021) edition of Sarah Ruden’s translation of The Aeneid. I read it on an iPad Pro and had no problems with the formatting.It was a wonderful, compact, fast-moving translation already, and now it’s even better. The first edition had a glossary but lacked some crucial information for novices (or old people with sketchy memories like me), which is now supplied in a very full set of notes. It makes for wonderful reading aloud, if you have anyone you want to read The Aeneid out loud to. It flows and it sings. A bang-on piece of work, although I realize that’s a disrespectful way to describe such a brilliantly-carried-out and difficult project.

Reading it with a book club. It's been 50 years since I read The Aeneid the first time, a tedious task during college. By contrast, re-reading the poem in this translation is a joy. It flows beautifully, its suspenseful, its refreshingly understandable. Explanatory notes at the bottom of the page provide helpful clues. I am on book 7 now and can't wait to follow the adventure to its end. Highly recommended.

As one who read the Aeneid in Latin in college, it was a joy to read this translation and compare it with the Latin and with other available translations. This one is outstanding.

I bought her first version but hadn't read it when this, her second version, came out. I'm wondering if she is done but, if not, I'll probably continue to buy future versions since her work is so remarkable on this classic.I was looking forward to reading this but when I started I noticed there weren't any annotations as there are with most other versions that I'm aware of. When reading classic literature I always find annotations to be extremely helpful if not necessary in some instances.I'll be reading another version.

I really enjoyed Ruden’s translation as it stuck true to the Latin for as much as possible. I really liked this especially for Book 12 as I translated Book 12 from it’s Latin myself before so I thought it was interesting where we both got the same idea or word choice from Vergil.
