Four different shorts with no strong connection, but still quite a blast from the past!
This is a review of the actual movie, not the release, for there are no extras except the trailers and the radio spots. It could have easily been one of the best horror anthologies ever made. However, the fact that it doesn't have a wrap- up story or any other kind of connection to hold the rest of them together does greatly damage the final product. The only thing that holds them together is that they're all pretty straightforward and have an urban legend feel. The last one seemed the weakest and longest. I couldn't stop thinking about Food of the Gods. However, that's not to say it's not worth watching. Genre regulars Lance Henriksen, Richard Masur, Veronica Carthwright, Cristina Raines and Emilio Estevez are all great doing their thing. The first two are the best, especially the second one, The Bishop of Battle, which has an atmosphere that mixes Over the Edge and Tron in equal parts. The visuals may be dated, but very creative nonetheless. The soundtrack on that one is also great; even the old school cholos at the arcade place brought back memories from yesteryear! The first one does pack a couple of jump scares and is the one that better fits the "urban legend" moniker of all four. Cristina Raines was the perfect casting choice in a movie that had nothing but stars for what I consider one of the best and most underrated horror films ever: The Sentinel.I like to think of Terror in Topanga and The Bishop of Battle as the two that splice together the best, since they deal with compulsive behaviors and their consequences. Good horror stories always pack some sort of lesson against some counterproductive character trait, or common errors. My final assessment is real simple; I've seen the most recent films of its kind and they just don't make them like this anymore!

Only worth it for Bishop of Battle
I had fond memories of this movie from seeing it as a kid. It doesn't really hold up, unfortunately. The Bishop of Battle is iconic, though, so it's worth it just for that sequence.

Fun 80's horror. What else could you ask for?
This movie is a lot of fun. Don't get this movie thinking it's going to blow your mind or be as great as Creepshow. It's just a fun horror anthology with some cool effects (and some really bad effects). I like the first two stories the most (Terror of Topanga and Bishop of Battle). Night of the Rat is okay. It has some really bad effects though, even for low budget 80's horror. I think they may have spent all their money on the effects for Bishop of Battle. Night of the rat was still a fun watch. My least favorite was the Benediction. I just found it to be really boring and rough to sit through. I recommend going to the bathroom or getting up for a snack through this one. Honestly, Nightmares is worth it for the first two stories alone. The acting is pretty good. Emilio is a little over the top but I think his character is meant to be. If you like cheesy 80's fun you'll like this. I highly recommend it.

Product of it's time
This is a movie that is totally of it's time and that's why I love it. It's a format that I love in telling a series of shorts. I really enjoy a series of tales that stand on their own and have to tell a complete story as much as possible in limited time. It's very obvious that it was made in the 80s. If you do not like or enjoy horror movies of that period you will not like this movie. It's just fun and there is moments that follow a formula which will forever be creepy and get you at moments. I first found this movie at a rental store when I was a teen and picked it up. Mind you that was 2002 and I was 19. I loved it and it's always been memorable for me. I love the 80s though. The golden age of horror good and bad. Better than you'd probably expect. I loved it. It's definitely worth a view. Not for those who don't like the period though. Make no mistake.

I am the Bishop of Battle... master of all I survey
God bless Shout/Scream factory for putting this underrated gem out on blu-ray. I saw this in the theater when it was first released, and by the time I discovered it was on DVD, it was already out of print and the used prices were ridiculous. So I'd search on Amazon about once a year to see if it had possibly been re-released, and this time I struck gold! The transfer to blu-ray isn't spectacular (though better than I expected) and neither is the commentary (the players can't remember much about its production), but I'm just happy to finally own it, particularly for the 'Bishop of Battle' segment. So if you want this, I'd suggest you grab it now, before it goes out of print again. If you haven't seen it, I'd probably only recommend it if you were into arcade games back in the 80's.

I LOVE this movie for the arcade / Bishop of Battle ...
The commentary is god awful. I LOVE this movie for the arcade / Bishop of Battle part. That's 5/5.I was hoping for more from the commentary. Producer's answer to pretty much every questions -- that's how it works since he has little to contribute without being asked -- is ... pause ... "I don't remember." Seriously, It's bad. Almost a complete waste of time. Actress from the first part adds little as well. She just seemed to happen to be a friend along for the ride.Still. I want to give it a 5/5 simple for being out on Blu and not $100 as an out-of-print DVD. Classic that deserves the solid treatment it gets here.I'm happy with the purchase and this company for the re-release!

Acceptable.
I actually quite like this movie, not a masterpiece by any standards, but good fun nonetheless. Very well made and has a certain charm all of its own. I found the first story the best, the chain smoking mother, putting herself in mortal danger to satisfy her cravings, something of an urban legend going on here. The other three stories totally acceptable, the last story about the giant rat was very entertaining, although the rat special effects leave a lot to be desired. One of those movies that fly by, and which doesn’t outstay it’s welcome. All in all, an entertaining way to pass the time, and one I would view again.

Good transfer, although a little grainy.
As this is the first time that this has been released in the UK I've been looking forward to seeing it, I knew about it in the 80s. It's an anthology of four short films, the first being based on an urban legend which was probably the best, as was the last with Veronica Cartwright which reminded me of Nigel Kneals Beasts series from the 70s. This is just a good film, not worthy of another watch.

Nightmares
Four horror stories originally film as part of a television anthology movie but considered to be to intense for tv viewers it was decided to release it as a theatrical film instead with additional footage shot for the horror going movie audiences.Special features include audio commentary and theatrical trailer.
