Q: Are the stones good enough that there is no immediate need to upgrade when I am ready for a larger board?

Yes, I definitely think the stones are good enough for 13 x 13 and even 19 x 19 boards. Yellow Mountain Imports used to sell a board that was beginner on one side and intermediate on the other side. Since they no longer sell that, I bought this board for my dad. The stones in both sets were exactly the same. I like the quality and feel of the stones, and there are more than enough stones to play the 13 x 13 version of Go. I have not counted the stones, but the description says it contains 361 pieces which is actually enough to play on a full 19 x 19 Go board. Based on the fact that I always have plenty extra when I play on a 13 x 13 board, that seems correct.

Q: Does it come with instructions?

Yes! A small reprint of a classic manual is included which includes sample moves and even short "case studies" which quizzes you on making correct moves.

Q: How many stones come for each color? To my knowledge it doesn't say in the description.

Description states 180 white, 181 black stones.

Q: Does it come in a box?

Only the shipping box but this is a beautiful board. I love mine!
