While on a cross-country drive, a bitter writer (international superstar Franco Nero of Django) and his beautiful wife (Corinne Clery, The Story of O and Moonraker) pick up a stranded motorist (David Hess of Last House on the Left infamy). But when this hitcher turns out to be a depraved psychopath, their road trip takes a vicious detour into sex and savagery where the miles are marked in mayhem and vengeance is the ultimate rule of thumb. Rarely seen in the U.S., causing it to be named “one of the greatest exploitation films no one has ever seen” (IGN), Hitch Hike is a sleaze epic fueled by wild performances, scenes of shocking violence, and a visceral score by legendary composer Ennio Morricone. This Raro Video release is completely uncut and uncensored and presents co-writer/director Pasquale Festa Campanile’s vision in all its shocking glory.Special Features:• Digitally restored• New HD transfer from original 35mm negative• Documentary: Road to Ruin (26 mins)• New and improved English subtitle translation

Great Eurosleaze. Includes the doc "Road to Ruin."
Franco Nero and Corinne Clery (Plot of Fear, The Story of O) play a bickering hubby and wife on an Ill-fated road trip. Actually, "bickering" is a vast understatement. They're downright caustic and cruel. The make the couple in the (similar premise) Ozploitation classic, The Long Weekend look like happy honeymooners. Franco Nero (swilling from a bottle of booze) also adheres to Bobby Knight's maxim "there's no such thing as rape between a husband and wife." Whew .Enter David Hess at his most "Krug-esque," albiet more introspective and articulate. However, his capacity for verbal and physical abuse rivals Jamie Gillis. Whew.Needless to say, Helter Skelter comes raining down. Extreme (and explicit) sexual mayhem ensues....Great bluray from Raro Video - outstanding picture and sound; lovingly packaged. The bonus feature worth the price: The Road to Ruin, a documentary about the film, wonderfully done. Fascinating Interviews with the three leads. Corinne Clery (still looking great), Franco Nero (ditto) and the late David Hess - who should have done a one man show, an ace raconteur! Crew members integral to the film also participate. Lots of clips/ stills/ photos from various movies and stages in the actor(s) previous films provide great entertainment and information. Great production values makes this doc theatrically releasable(45 minute runtime aside).Written by Fernando di Leo and directed by Pasquale Festa Campanile, famous for his S&M opus, The Slave, The Libertine and one of the strangest Studio (Warner Bros) film ever made, The Chastity Belt. A truly great artsploitarion film.

BLU-RAY REVIEW
excellent transfer of this film; definitely remastered & improved; if you need subtitles, you must watch in Italian; if you watch in dubbed English, you cannot have subtitles; it’s strange to watch a film that supposedly takes place in the USA but the characters speak Italian; basically for Corinne Clery fans two years after Story of O

Violence-dominated action thriller
“Hitch Hike” stars Franco Nero (“Django”) as Walter Mancini, an alcoholic newspaper editor. He and his wife, Eve (Corinne Clery, “The Story of O”), are on a road trip across California to save their troubled marriage. Along the way, they pick up a stranded motorist (David Hess) who introduces himself as Adam Konitz. Konitz soon turns out to be a sadistic psychopath from an institution for the criminally insane. He’s running from the law and his two accomplices after stealing $2 million. He takes the couple hostage and orders them to head to Mexico. Walter and Eve try to find not only a way to get rid of the hitch-hiker, but also a way to deal with each other when both have their sights on the stolen money.Rarely seen in the United States, “Hitch Hike” is an Italian production made in 1977. It contains a great deal of violence, much of it exploitative. Director Pasquale Festa Campanile relies on violence and misogyny to supply interest, with Eve stripped, raped and humiliated for most of the film, though she is clearly more emotionally mature than the men. Attempting to make the dialogue ominous and foreboding, the script only succeeds in making it sound pretentious and awkwardly bombastic. The movie was filmed in Italy, with Italian locations effectively standing in for the American Southwest. The score is by Ennio Morricone (“The Good, the Bad and the Ugly,” “The Hateful Eight”).Special features on the new widescreen HD Blu-ray transfer from an original 35-mm negative include the half-hour documentary “Road to Ruin” and a fully illustrated booklet. The soundtrack is available in English and in Italian with English subtitles.
