Do Not Buy!
Stay far from these!!! Upon FIRST use after installation, only 2 of tuners were functioning properly. The third tuner was not rotating smoothly, very choppy and sticking (on the inside) The fourth began to work as initial tuning began, but stopped functioning midway through the tuning process, grinding to a halt and stripped rendering it completely useless. Now what? A 5 string banjo with 4 strings. 2 tuners work, one barley works and one broken- all out of the box, first use... I have myself only to blame, thinking that as the price was a bit higher than others offered, I thought they would be of a slightly better quality. I was wrong... Buyer beware, these are absolute junk. The old saying is ringing true in my ears: You get what you pay for... Save yourself the grief and aggravation do not buy these tuners. Spend the money for a real set of quality tuners, like I am about to do (and should have done in the first place)

" The overall quality seems fine for the price
I have had these for a week, and I will certainly update the review if anything changes.Three out of the four are smooth turning, but the fourth is a little "notchy." The overall quality seems fine for the price. I am not using the geared 5th tuner as these are on an Irish tenor banjo. The 5th peg is certainly not smooth like the geared tuners on my other banjo's. They are chrome plated which matches the rest of the cheap hardware on this banjo, so while it's not what I would prefer it works out well in this case. The plating is even, and smooth.Tuning with these is uneventful, and predictable. Just the way you'd like it to be. There is no slipping, or lag in the response to adjustments. I am able to tune very precisely even with the low GDAE tuning of the Irish tenor. If the action was smooth on the whole set I would have given 5 stars, but the quality control is clearly hit or miss. Still completely serviceable.

So far, not so good.
so far, 2 of these have a 'catch' before installing. I have to drill out my peg holes, so I am ordering another set in hopes of getting 4 good pegs...before drilling....scarey, I will update post when finished.Update...I've decided to just return after seeing all of the other horrific reviews with the same problems....i don't want to ruin my banjo.

Gears bind up under tension
Don't waist your time on these. They are poorly machined and impossible to use.. When you wind the strings they catch then slip repeatedly and some bind up all together. This is not just a little grit in the gears. More like chunks of metal shavings. Ihave been playing for 54 years and never seen such crap.

Save for something better.
These are terrible. I’m bummed! They don’t hold tune at all. Instead of updating my banjo I’ve rendered it unplayable. They were shipped promptly and well packaged, FWIW.

One of them broke
One of the strings broke before it was ever played. My husband, the user, is a really good banjo player, so it wasn't ham-handedness on his part.

Pure TRASH and will not keep banjo in tune.
Won't keep banjo in tune. Buy a more expensive brand. Grinding sound uneven revolution.

Good value tuners
I bought these to upgrade some friction tuners on an old 4 string banjo as I did not want to use the guitar type tuners, I was a bit concerned by the negative reviews but finding the friction tuners on the Banjo nearly impossible to use I decided to bite the bullet and order these. If you are replacing like for like then I would imagine they are a straight swap, however if like me you are changing tuner type then a little work is required.Firstly the hole need for the tuner to pass through the headstock needs to be 10mm, I enlarged the existing hole 1mm at a time drilling half way through each time (front to middle then back to middle, not drilling straight through as this can cause damage. When this was done I placed the tuners in the headstock, there is a small pin on the tuners to prevent them turning, I pushed the tuner gently so that the pin made a mark on the wood. I then drilled a 1.2mm hole the depth being the same as the pin length (I used a Dremel on slow speed). You then put the tuners in the headstock and put the washers on and then the bolts that secure them in place. There is a friction washer between the pearl button and the metal part of the tuner so if they are a bit stiff just loosen the screw on the end of the pearl button a bit, if they are a bit loose then tighten the screw a bit.I am really pleased with these tuners, it is now possible to tune this old banjo easily in a minute or so rather than it being a half hour battle and for the price they are good value for money. Time will tell how durable they are, but so far so good.Update:Well 1 day in and 2 of the tuners have stopped working, currently trying to get replacements or refund from seller.Update:The seller was very helpful and sent replacement tuners promptly, I fitted them a couple of weeks ago and so far all is ok. I am still pleased with the tuners and they all now seem to work well, I still think they are good value however it did require some to be replaced to get a set that all worked.
