From the Manufacturer One of the greatest military commanders and tacticians in history descends on the Roman Empire once again. Do you face him as Rome and try to ward the invasion that comes from the North, or do you climb atop your war elephant and show Rome you will take that which they hold most dear: their territory. Designed with all new artwork from Kurt Miller this is a reprint of the very popular Avalon-Hill version from 1996. The game uses the popular card system, which first appeared in Avalon Hill's We the People, to recount the Second Punic War from 218 to 203 B.C. Players use strategic-level cards for multiple purposes: moving generals, levying new troops, reinforcing existing armies, gaining political control of the provinces involved in the war, and generating historical events. When two armies meet on the battlefield, a second set of cards, called Battle Cards, are used to determine the winner. Ultimately both players seek victory by dominating both fronts: military and political.

Great Game
This is possibly one of the best strategy games out there for the experienced gamer. Everything is historical without getting in the way of being extremely fun. The only issue is the stands for the generals were made of shoddy plastic and break easily, so be prepared with converted paperclips

Masterpiece of design; the luck can be a little swingy at times, but is extremely rewarding to play.

An Epic Classic gets Beautiful
First developed and published by Avalon Hill more than 25 years ago, Hannibal has aged beautifully. It has always been an epic, tense one-on-one game of warfare and area control. This reprint by Valley Games leaves the game play essentially unchanged, and takes advantage of the graphic and printing capabilities available now to freshen (without cheapening) the look of the board, the counters, the cards, and the rule book. The game is not for the faint of heart. You have to be ready to digest a well-organized 25 page rule book and if you can finish in the box time of 2-1/2 hours, you're quite a bit faster than I am. But if you like campaigns that play out differently every time, and little pieces of cardboard that seem to take on heroic personalities, give Hannibal a try. Sometimes things do get better with age.

Hannibal Redux
LOVE THIS GAME!! Valley Games redoes the old Avalon Hill classic. The card driven system works like the "We the People" game. It takes about 2-3 hours to play after you get the rules down. Lots of fun with different avenues of approach to victory. The only complaint I have is with the Bonus pieces (the generals). They came off of their bases and with heads broken off. They also need to be painted to be more identifiable. Some of the regular bases break easily as well. Those are minor complaints, this game rocks.

Will Rome or Carthage fall
A great game that follows the second Punic wars and pits you one on one with your opponent. Great strategy war game.

A great timeless game
A very satisfying game structure from either Roman or Carthaginian side.I replaced the cardboard counters with painted lead figures of ancient leaders to add an extra dimension to the game.

Over rated game
This game is highly overrated. It favors Rome. Rome is in striking distance of Carthage in two turns. It takes Hannibal longer to reach Italy and it is more costly to cross the Alps than it is for Rome to sail from Syracuse. The naval rule limits Cartahge greatly and can be devastating to attack Rome. Around Marseilles, there is no reason to try to hold them because the political control markers do not add up to any benefit. Some important cards can decide the fate of the game, especially if your opponent receives them. The game was terribly disappointing and should not be ranked as high as it is.

One of the best 2 player strategy games out there
One of the best 2 player strategy games out there. Be prepared to do some reading though, the rules will take some getting used to. Once that's out of the way, its a rewarding game. There are also lots of player aids and faqs out there for this game if you do a search for it.

£20 for classic
Exceptional low complexity card driven wargame. Bought for only £20 as the seller must have got hold of some bankrupt stock from somewhere. This game usually changes hands for many ££, get a copy whilst you can although a new edition is due out later this year.

interesting idea but mountainous rulebook
All good games like football or Go have a simple idea and emergent complexity. This one doesn't. It would suit lawyers, or management consultants or traffic wardens.
