Ruth Heller was brilliant and "Chickens" was the crown
We bought in '85 or early '86. Our son was coming up on 3 years old. He loved the book and demanded it every night for at least a couple of months. Ruth Heller was coming to sign books at Hicklebee's kids bookstore in January 1986, and we took our son to meet her. When we met her, we told her how he loved "Chickens," and he recites the last line the last line: "Chickens aren't the only ones / there's no more to discuss / Everyone who lays an egg is / O-VI-PA-ROUS!" She was impressed by him being able to say "oviparous".The book is in verse, about animals that lay eggs (and there are more than you think). She also did the illustrations, in wonderful eye-popping colors. All of her books are in verse, with beautiful illustrations; some are about animals, some about parts of speech (and other things). Kids love her "How to Hide" series, with pictures of animals with one camouflaged that they have to find. I can't say enough good things about her books.

Great read for all kids.
My son loves this book because it has all his favorite animals. It talks about the animals that lay eggs from big to small, reptiles and everything in between. His school gifted him the spanish version and because he loved it so much we bought this one.

Kids Love It
I am a pre-school teacher (in a rural area between forest and sea) and every year we talk about snakes and sea creatures and chickens. So this book is pulled out every year as it so perfectly ties these together and explains in detail enough for 4 and 5 year olds about eggs and the many creatures that lay them.

Great - just not good for library binding
As a science teacher, I could not be happier. This book uses engaging artwork along with rhyming text to explain that more than chickens lay eggs. The book includes birds, reptiles, dinos, amphibians, fish, snails, octopi, spiders, insects, and monotremes. I am so thrilled that a book easily readable in preschool contains such clear information and a lot to discuss and so many projects could connect to this. The book would be great for units covering: Easter, spring, babies, life cycles, animals, etc.Overall, buy the paperback or hardcover, not the library binding as it cuts off the word caterpillar in the spine.BTW, I bought this book without realizing that I already own a number of her books. I liked her camouflage books too.

Good early science book
Good informative book. I may order the mammal one too. I do wish the illustrated pictures were a little more vibrant. Held my 2 year old's interest.

We love this book!!
I bought this for our 3 year old daughter. I love the detail in the illustrations. The accuracy and non cartoonish drawings are exceptional! The rhyming is fun to read and easy for our daughter to listen to. As a homeschooling mom, I love that we can begin teaching solid scientific facts in a fun and engaging way with our preschool aged kiddo. I want to order more of Ruth Heller's books. I'm so glad we found her work!!

Gorgeous illustrations and great intro to some science
I had this as a toddler and now bought a copy for my little 1 year old. He loves to eat eggs and now can group animals by which ones are oviparous. The book is beautifully illustrated and introduces the concept of animals who lay eggs in a beautiful way.
