Amazing woman to be admired and remembered!
Rosa Young is a name that sadly has not been recognized as a heroine of both the African American community and the Christian faith as a whole. I had never heard of her until I read a short article in the September 2016 issue of Lutheran Witness. Her steadfast desire to educate the poorest of the poor, while facing constant persecution, not only from the evil racists of the KKK but from her own community because they felt she was a traitor for being brought to faith in a "white" church body (the Lutheran Church Missouri Synod), is a model of courage we should all admire, regardless of race, denomination, or "social class." She truly is an overlooked heroine, not only of the African-American community, but of Christian faith, as well as humanity as a whole.

Awesome Read
Incredible story. Hits close to home because of knowing the places involved in her teaching. I never knew about her till I stumbled upon her grave at Rosebud.

Faith, prayer and perseverance prevail
This was an eye-opening book for me about the condition of African Americans in late 1800s, early 1900s in the South. They suffered both physical and spiritual poverty. It is a story of how God worked perseverance in the heart of one woman to better her people through education. She was a woman of great faith and prayer, and God connected her with the Lutheran Church to bring good education and the light of the Gospel to her region. As a result, her eyes were opened to all that Jesus had done for her to save her from her sins. Her model of education and church planting spread rapidly but also brought great persecution to her.

How the Lutheran religion spread throughout Alabama and southward
The story was insightful and charming. The author's honesty and persistence despite the difficulty she faced were very admirable. Our book club will thoroughly enjoy this book.

It's about CHRIST!
That this young, poor, black girl from Selma, Alabama, was so astute to discern the false teaching so prevalent in what she heard and then to recognize the pure Gospel when it was preached is nothing but the work of the Holy Spirit. She humbles me as a pastor as to what she went through for the sake of the Gospel. THIS Rosa far surpasses the other Rosa for she truly lived in the "Theology of the Cross." Soli Deo Gloria - "To God alone be the glory!"A must read for every Christian!!!

Important details of the pre-MLK days
This book could be a hard read at times as she references many of the denomination leaders and it can be hard to keep track of who is who.Overall a good read. Highly recommend for anyone wanting personal accounts of the struggles to improve the lives of African Americans pre-MLK.

Faith filled.
This is a more detailed book on the life of Rosa Young. It is for the adult reader and really delves into struggles and how faith can carry you through the most difficult parts of life. It also shows a woman's faith that allows her to share her faith and help grow others in their faith.
