Interrupted Writing Flow
I’ve only read a short amount so far, so this review could be subject to change. One of the things that has really put me off so far is the repeated use of the character’s name! It’s annoying and really interrupts the flow. For example, her name is used 5 times on the first page and 7 on the second. It’s something that should’ve been picked up via the editor, so I’m surprised it wasn’t.

Damaged book delivered, returning before reading
The low star is for the product and not the content. I have not read the book yet, literally arrived today.I was just about to start reading it when I felt the back cover. There is a significant slice in the book and it damaged through to the back pages.Really disappointed I have to return this book, but as someone who can barely crack the spine of books, this has me very anxious. Poor book. Also the book came with another book, with this one on top of the large book. Second book not damaged, so must have happened before packing. Will return and then review the contents

Utterly wonderful
I know that a number of other early readers have compared this book to a K-Drama. I personally haven’t watched many K Dramas, not for lack of wanting to but because I tend to craft when I watch TV and that makes following along with subtitles a little difficult. However, I understand the concept enough to quite confidently state that the comparison is well deserved. This has all of those comforting tropes and shocking twists that make K-Dramas such a beloved ‘genre’.That being said, Gumihoh: Wicked Fox, is more than just a comfort read, it has some serious worldbuilding and mythology backing up why things happen in the books. I’ve been reading a lot of Japanese/Japanese-inspired stories lately and I thought I would have had my fill of magical fox-spirits but actually, the Korean Gumiho is distinct enough from the Japanese Kitsune that it feels much more enriching. I realised how shockingly lacking my knowledge of Korean culture and mythology is and will certainly be seeking out more Korean fantasy in the near future. So yes, don’t write this book off as fluffy Ya fantasy romance – it is fluffy YA fantasy romance but it’s an exceptional example of doing that and doing it well, while also being MORE than that. The romance was incredibly sweet. I felt like this was, despite the fantasy elements, a hugely believable YA romance. I liked that it wasn’t straight to ‘I will die for you’ but grew a little more organically than that. You get the feeling that these characters definitely care for each other but it isn’t quite the obsession that other YA romances tend to portray. I’ll be interested to see if that balance can be kept up in later books in the series?Like some other reviewers, I found it was the epilogue that threw me a little, this book ends quite perfectly and in the space of a page or two everything is thrown into the air again, clearly paving the way for a sequel. I’m not sure this will be a negative for people, but I would have maybe liked a moment to breathe, to revel in the ending, before being thrust back into danger – that might be a matter of personal preference.Overall, I think this book is exceptional. I’d recommend it to anyone who enjoys YA fantasy, particularly the kind that takes place within the real world. I’d also recommend it as a great example of a book that takes place in a city outside the US or the UK. This book definitely felt like it came from a person who loved Seol, and it has inspired me to add it to my list of places I must travel one day (when we’ve worked out eco-friendly planes). My rating: 4.5/5I received a free copy of this book from the publisher. All opinions are my own.

-Featuring myths, romance and drama
I don't know where to start with this enchanting, beautiful book. Gumiho, Wicked Fox completely swept me off my feet.Gumiho is a YA urban fantasy that takes place in Seoul, South Korea! Korea is a background we see in so few YA books, and it gave a unique aspect to this book. The Korea of Gumiho was realistic and crackling with energy; it didn't take me long to find myself utterly lost in the streets of Seoul with Jihoon and Miyoung. As the title suggests, this book explores the myth of the Gumiho: The Nine Tailed Fox. I always adore it when myths and legends are incorporated into books, and this one was no exception! As well as our Gumiho, we see Shamans, Goblins (both good and bad) and all sorts of magic from Korean mythology. On top of this, Gumiho brings in aspects and tropes of Koreas much loved K-Dramas, to create a thrilling and mystical experience of a book! The characters in this book were absolutely awesome. Not only were Jihoon and Miyoung amazing, I adored all the secondary characters, especially Somin and Jihoon's Halmeoni. Their vibrant personalities and realistic relationships really lit this story up. The dialogue between all the characters was witty and genuine, something I enjoyed greatly.Jihoon and Miyoung were the perfect balance to each other. Jihoon was friendly and loyal, Miyoung was fierce and withdrawn. But they both grew throughout the course of the book in amazing character arcs. They both work past their past traumas and harsh backgrounds and find the light amid the chaos of their lives. The plot was well paced and enticing. The first third of the book introduced the characters perfectly and the rest of the book went on to be full of action, adventure and dramatics. Gumiho was an absolute page turner. I could barely put it down.Kat Cho's writing was lyrical and cutesy, and it's remarkable that it's her debut book! Gumiho drew me in and kept me hooked. It was classy and stunning and never got boring.Kat Cho's debut was an absolute revelation that I'm so happy to have had the pleasure of reading. If you love immersive fantasies, beautiful romances and ancient legends, this is the book for you. I really can't recommend it enough.
