Crisis in the Red Zone: The Story of the Deadliest Ebola Outbreak in History, and of the Viruses to Come

Read it, learn about viruses and the heroes dedicated to protecting us.
Wonderfully written story about Ebola outbreak in West Africa. I lived in Ghana for 2 years as a Peace Corps volunteer and this book shows a great amount of respect for Africans that is true to who they are and how they live. The information about viruses is valuable. So many stories have unlikable people in them, but in this book the virus is the only villain and most everyone is a hero. This is written as a homage to those who risked their lives to protect the rest of us from a virus.

A gripping story!
This book is a real page turner. Richard Preston, like Michael Crichton, can both entertain you and teach you at the same time. I highly recommend this book.

As a physician interested in infectious diseases
Nice narration about the Ebola epidemic in Sierra Leone and Guiny. You will not sleep, not eat, not go to work , until you finish reading ; it is that full of suspense ; so much that my pulse got racing often . Richard Preston is really good . I think this book ought to be required reading in schools and college ; scary but we need to know about the possible dangers out there . We should stop wars and get together to fight the real scary enemy : killer viruses and bacteria !

Eerie, scary, true, well-written and foreshadowing
Great addition as a sequel to the Hot Zone from the 90’s it’s an easy read that gives frightening detail to the 2014 Ebola outbreak that eventually reached the US. Given current world circumstances it’s a an eerie pre-cursor to today’s world and what could be in the future. If you enjoyed Hot Zone, you will love this as well. Preston is a fantastic writer.

Very good
As with most of Richard Preston's work this is a shining example of good reporting. The stories inside are compelling and will keep you turning pages. My only concern is that there seem to be minor discrepancies with some of the stories and people mentioned in previous works. It's unclear if there was perhaps some new info given to Preston, or if details were misremembered, or what exactly the issue was. But overall it's a very good book and I would highly recommend it.

Brilliant, gripping, and frighteningly relevant
This book is terrifying, especially considering the state of the world today. It’s a thrilling read, with very compelling stories of the individuals involved and interesting science dripping off every page. (Though I’ll be honest, I found The Hot Zone a slightly better read) I think, what really sold me though, is the end and how Richard Preston somehow predicted what would come of the world only months following publication. Will definitely read again, but not for a very long time.
