Melee Board Game

Melee is a super fast game, almost a micro-game, except that it has a solid and clever design that makes it much more than that. It's designed by Rikki Tahta, the creator of one of my favourite card games Coup. Melee also features elements of bluffing and outguessing, but as part of a small board game.Players are placing units on a small map, and over the course of four turns, trying to recruit more units, moving and attacking their opponents' units where possible, in an effort to control the most provinces by game end, or conquer an opponent's castle for an instant win. Units include Soldiers, Knights, Camps, and Catapults, each of which has different abilities. But perhaps best of all is the amazing combat mechanic: the attacker must make a blind bid with some of his gold, and if the defender correctly guesses the amount of gold being paid, the attack fails.It's brilliant, and it's fun! The real highlight is the ingenious bidding/combat mechanic. Resolving battles in this way gives players opportunity to engage in a Princess Bride style battle of wits, using probability and psychology, and creating suspense and unforgettable moments of entertainment. There's a military aspect, but it's also closely woven together with your economy, in the sense that you need to use your money wisely for both recruiting units and doing attacks. You can also bid for Special Ability cards at the start of the game, which give you different powers to use the entire game, and help keep every game fresh.Remarkably, the game plays in only 15-20 minutes. While there's a bit of a learning curve in your first game, once you have the game-play rules mastered, it turns into enormous fun, especially with 3-4 players. If you love bluffing type games, and are looking for a quick game with dudes on a map that offers a great deal of interaction and fun in a short space of time, this is definitely worth taking a look at! - EndersGame @ BGG

Bought this on Kickstarter because I love all this publisher's games. It's a quick play with only 4 rounds but it's still very strategic. The bluffing makes it really entertaining and there are many strategies.
