Silver Brush Limited 3008S-1 Black Velvet Square Wash Paintbrush for Watercolor, Gouache, Inks, & Dyes, Size 1 Inch, Short Handle

The feel of a brush is very subjective, this one has the right amount of spring for my touch. It holds enough paint to allow me to lay down long shadows in a single stroke.

This brand changed my paintings. One star deducted as there was no starch/stiffner in the bristles. The company says they use starch for on all size brushes. It was just in a ziplock bag w/o protection. I needed it for a project and used it and it seems fine.

Silver Black Velvet brushes are one of my favorite - the blend of squirrel and synthetic hair holds a lot of water/paint and also has good responsive "snap." This 1/4" flat is a good little brush. However, the packaging was awful - the brush arrived looking just like it does in the photo, with hairs askew and no protective cover at the head nor fixative on the hairs to hold them in place or to an edge. Fortunately the brush itself is quality enough that I mended the brush immediately on arrival (a bit of hair gel and used my fingers to smooth it all down and put the hairs to a proper "edge" then let it dry), and waited a couple of days before first use. After rinsing the hair gel out, the bristles maintained their edge, and the brush performs well.

Nice brush of course. Just concerned that the tip can get damaged during shipping because there is no tip protection (like plastic cover) during shipping.

I haven't used it much yet but it is nice to have a flat brush and this one seems to suit my needs.

I have gotten several of these brushes to slowly replace the ones that I have with something a little higher quality. I think this brand brushes are great quality without breaking the bank. Will definitely get more as the budget allows.

I'm really picky about my brushes - I literally bought and tested about 30 different brushes before I came across a glowing review for these on an art site and decided to give them a try. I love these brushes. They are just about perfect and I've been accumulating the entire set of them as I can afford to. ( I'm a bit confused about the handle on this one which is different than the wooden handles on most of the others, but it doesn't affect my usage of the brush... its more curiosity.)

On first impressions I can see why Silver Black Velvet has an enthusiastic following. For context, my most expensive brushes to date have been Princeton Neptune - at first I had hated how squishy and limp Neptunes get when they run low on water, but I eventually made peace with the feature and am actually really beginning to like them… which is a good thing for my Silver Black Velvet brush foray, as I find this new brush has a similar quality. There’s a subtle difference; I think the Velvet offers a tiny bit more precision/control than Neptunes, but it’s a bit early to say for sure.HOWEVER, this particular brush is a miracle to even be in usable condition! Shipped without any protective cover, it worked its way out of its plastic baggie during transit to be jostled around with the other items in my Amazon package. Was kinda scruffy when I got it. I’m just lucky there doesn’t appear to be any real damage to the bristles.In sum, I do like how it paints. Unfortunately, even if it does end up being my new favourite brush, I’d hesitate to order another Silver Black Velvet online. Too expensive for the gamble of receiving a damaged brush in transit next time around.
