I'd buy it again
This book is a gem! It is far more than I ever expected, and it delights me every time I pick it up. It's full of beautiful pictures, and the type print makes it seem like it's a real historical masterpiece. It's much heavier than I expected, but so is the content. I have NO regrets and I consider it one of the best purchases I've ever made.

It's huge.
If you are a careful description reader you will have caught that this book is 8 x 11 and 3 inches thick. I am an avid review reader and no one mentioned it. I have it now (I live overseas and so I ordered it in January and my husband just made a trip back to the states to bring it for my daughter's birthday and its May.) and it is giant. It is something designed to sit on a shelf and be looked at, not to be read and enjoyed in that way.So no negatives to the book's quality or anything, but it is not what I was looking for.

Classic allegory with enduring appeal
The reason this is a still a classic is because of the vivid symbolism of the allegory that is at the same time both simple and very deep. Things like the Slough of Despond and Vanity Fair are images that last through time. One of the best things is that it shows multiple pilgrims - not just Christian but others, including Christiana his wife and their children - going through the same obstacles but experiencing them in different ways depending on different circumstances and temperaments. The actual theology itself is mostly pretty uncontroversial apart from the Pope making an appearance as a villain and some points that come up in the various catechetical conversations between the characters. It's a little bit sexist in that when Christian goes on his pilgrimage he fights various opponents himself but when Christiana goes she needs male protectors to fight them for her. This would be legit if it weren't meant to be allegorical; i.e. if you followed this to its logical allegorical conclusion, it would mean that women can't fight spiritual battles, and this is clearly not what Bunyan meant to say. But he felt it had to be portrayed this way just because of the confronting nature of the image of a woman fighting. There's a cringeworthy racist moment where a black man - the only one in the book - turns up and guess what, he's a villain. I guess that's par for the course in books of this era.Despite a few niggles, this is a decent allegory and it's worth reading. It expresses a lot of deep thoughts in the form of an easy to understand allegory and also surprisingly easy to understand English, which is pretty amazing considering how long ago it was written.

Beautiful Edition
I purchased this book in 2018. I received a beautifully printed edition. The old fashioned cover is reminiscent of an antique family Bible. The large print is eye easing, and a history of John Bunyan is included along with a couple of his other books and rather lengthy introduction to Pilgrims Progress. The pages are well printed, no smudges. I paid about €47 for it, a good price for a deluxe edition. 2018.

My what a big ribbon!
This edition is very nice. Nice not expensive taste kind of nice but just nice. The cover and binding are done as cheaply as humanly possible. The gold gilding is like a gold sharpie marker type quality. The "signatures" are way too big for a book of this size. There should only be 1 signature every 10 pages, 20 pages max. The book is the same size as a family bible. This is not heirloom quality. This is read it once then stick it on a shelf to look pretty. I would have preferred real leather and the works for more money. But hey it is nice for the price. Could have been better and there is much left to be desited. The cover is made of genuine cardbard with a paper picture and a thin rubbery plastic spray to " protect" the nice picture on the cover and spine.I like this, but not in love. The redeeming factor in my purchase is the formating of the text (which is double column) and the fact that all his works are in one volume with all the lovely pictures. I agree that this will be read to my kids. Nut i will have to rebind this before passing it on. The quality is not as good as they advertized. The English is smoother though. The other redeeming factor is there is 1" wide ribbone in the book. Its massive. I giggled a bit when i saw it.If you watched the movie then you will definately want this edition.

The Pilgrims Progress
I hadn't read this for a long time, and after it being mentioned in church, I thought it was about time I read it again. The language was a bit old fashioned, but I got used to it and found it very enjoyable and a moral tale.

Lessons for your journey
Still amazingly applicable after all these years. The similarities between Christian's walk and the walk taken by today's pilgrims is a testament to the endurance of the word of truth that is God's word found in scripture
