The Ant and the Elephant: Leadership for the Self

Not just a DO THIS book - really struck a chord
I've read plenty of other books on this subject - getting your subconscious mind inline with your conscious mind...and none have been able to make it click and walk you through it. The best part of the book is when it discusses the failure points...the stuff I've been through personally in multiple attempts on this journey of alignment, and how those examples really hit home and offered advice on how to work through it. Really, really relevant book.

Thought Provoking
This small read is absolutely wonderful. Awakens the thoughts and senses to want to keep moving forward in the chosen career or life successfully. I will be reading this book again and again until the positive message sets in. Thank you Vince.

Learn to control your elephant
I love parables and alagories. I don't know what it is exactely, maybe it is a return to the cartoon parables we watched in the 50's and 60's, but parables seem to be a great way of illustrating complex issues simply. THE ANT AND THE ELEPHANT is a great little story by Vince Poscente that represents the struggles between our conscious mind (the ant) and our subconscious mind (the elephant).Late in the book (in the afterword), Poscente explains that in one second of time the conscious mind uses some 2 thousand neurons, but the subconscious mind in the same second of time uses 4 billion neurons. Is it any wonder why we want to do one thing (stop smoking, eat less, exercise more, get to bed earlier, etc) but we end up doing just the opposite? We make decisions with our conscious mind, but let our subconscious mind control our actions. This story is about Adir, the ant. Adir lives on the back of Elgo the elephant, although at first he doesn't even realize he lives there. Adir and Elgo both want to reach the oasis, representative of our personal goals, but Elgo (the subconscious) keeps leading them astray. Adir, with the help of a very wise mentor and coach, Brio the owl, begins to learn how to control Elgo's actions. This is a fun little story and is a quick and easy read. I really liked Poscente's writing style. He interjects tidbits of humor into the story and at the end of each chapter, he reviews the action item that needs to be taken. Follow these steps and you will find your oasis.

Vince Poscente really gets "it!"
The Ant and The Elephant really drew me in and surprised me with it's simple leadership lessons. Our subconscious mind has a greater impact on our personal success than previously thought and Vince lays out his strategies in a timeless business parable that gives anyone the keys to success. This is why Ant and The Elephant is recommended reading at FedEx. And I highly recommend this and all of Vince Poscente's books.

Outstanding book for supervisors
The book is excellent way to look at yourself before looking and leading others. The only complaint is that the dust jacket had a slight cut in it.

no matter how small you think you are or how big a beast you are trying to steer - its possible to change
A brilliant parable that delivers a powerful and easy to understand message. Really is a book that everyone should read in order to understand how important it is to lead yourself in order to lead others.

A keeper
One of the best books on the relationship between the conscious and subconscious mind. It is the story of Adir (an ant) and Elgo (an elephant). Not only is the book an excellent read for all adults, but it would be a great book to read and discuss with your children (eight up depending on the child). A couple of great pieces of wisdom from the book, "You don't know what you don't know. Open your mind to discover possibilities that may not be obvious at the time." and (after Elgo has chased down lions but run away from mice ...As you recognize the feeling of fear, ask yourself in a rational way, "Would I rather reach my goals or stay afraid?.Very entertaining, easy to read, and insightful. I would recommend reading the story with a highlighter in hand. It is also a book that should be read again and again.
