After having spent four decades in southern philanthropy, I was not sure I could learn anything new. I was so wrong. This book which traces the history of philanthropy in the South (including that which came from the North) had stories I was not familiar with. Also, the intertwining of race in the South with the role (or not) of philanthropy was so elucidating.
