This essential 2-CD set explores the music of the Merseybeat phenomenon, focusing on the major players, The Beatles, of course, but also Gerry & The Pacemakers, The Big Three, The Searchers, The Undertakers, and The Swinging Blue Jeans among many others. These are all brought together with a welter of cult classics and intriguing oddities. Incorporating all strands of the scene, Merseybeat gives equal space to the beat merchants, the R&B bands, the mods, the rockers, the girl groups and the balladeers to come up with the ultimate primer of a movement that effectively kick-started modern British music. Castle Music. 2006.

Best of the 1960s Liverpool Scene.
I don't think I've ever heard a better compliation of songs, musical styles put together and noting the music scene in the early 1960s in Liverpool; and known to us Americans as the British Invasion. This compliation, however, has more of the obscure groups, singers that did not necessarily make it big, either in England nor the United States. However, it is fantastic; I don't know of a better CD disc to play and to get the feel of the excitement and energy these performers exuded during their prime. It is more than worth the money; it is simply fabulous, from beginning to end.

WOW! It's like being in the Cavern!
I have been a serious British Invasion/Mersey Beat Fan and Collector for 46 years, and this is the Best compilation of rare Mersey Beat recordings that I have found. It really allows you to hear the sounds of the Beatles times, and how they were influenced by and influenced them.

Mersey Beat : The story of the 60's
There are maybe 5 or 6 well known tracks by relatively well known artists on this album. The rest are not well known - listen to this album and you will figure out why these bands never made it big.I have a couple of old LP's of Mersey beat compilations from other bands who never really made it to national fame but yet you feel like you are experiencing some of that energy that was around in the clubs in Liverpool in 1962/1963. The problem with this compilation is that it contains a lot of stuff that sounds like an attempt to jump on the Beatles/Gerry and The Pacemakers/Bill J Kramer etc bandwagon after the event. There is no raw energy there and not a lot of talent either. Look at the dates on these recordings - they are around 1965 - that gives you a clue as to what is going on. Merseybeat had been and gone, the Beatles were experimenting with Indian music, drugs and recording backwards and there was a new wave of bands like The Byrds, The Doors etc ready to take music to a new level - the bands on this compilation were just trying to get some mileage out of an idea that had had its day.I am afraid this one is going into the back of the CD rack and isn't likely to be played again.

A great overview of Liverpudlian bands
All one has to do is compare this two disc CD with any Rhino release and its of that quality. It takes LESSER name groups and gives them their day in the sun. All original tracks and well worth the money, good show

"Merseybeat - The Story of the 60s" contains two CDs "Best Of Mersey Beat"
Two years after purchase, I realize that my copy of "Merseybeat - The Story of the 60s Liverpool Sound" actually contains two identical CDs of "Best Of Mersey Beat", 2003, ASIN: B00009L1O6, though the label on the two CDs reads "Merseybeat - The Story of the 60s Liverpool Sound" Disc One and Disc Two "See Inlay for Track Details". Indeed, this inlay is for the CDs purchased. Very strange.Have to blame myself for not listening carefully enough the first time round.

Merseybeat-The Story of the 60's Liverpool Sound
I rate this album 2 as most of the songs on the cd are on other complimation albums. Main criticism though are some tracks are not listed on the actual sleeve and at times in the wrong order.
