... and Garageband for a couple weeks and it is brilliant. Makes recording into an iPad super easy
I've been using this with my iPad 2 and Garageband for a couple weeks and it is brilliant. Makes recording into an iPad super easy. The iPad can get quite warm after a long period of time, but it has not caused any problems for me. I was experiencing a hum with my guitar but it has nothing to do with this product. I purchased a $22 hum eliminator on Amazon and it removed the hum completely. I'm getting very clear recordings now. Buy it.

Make it adaptable, Alesis!
Great product, but Alesis really needs to do something about compatibility with iPad Air and later. It's possible to make the air fit, but they really ought to make an updated sled to adapt to it. With the release of the iPad Pro, compatibility is an even more significant issue: the device is too large to fit the sled. Meaning that were I to upgrade to the iPad pro, my dock would be useless. Other issues might be better addressed in a future version such as USB MIDI in (this only has out); adjustable angle for better visibility and easier access to input gain controls, although I Appreciate that Alesis is going for a simple and uncluttered, clean appearance. This could be done via an app on the iPad similar to a mixer or an assignable single knob/soft-touch button. Battery power would be a great idea for greater portability.I'm giving it 3 stars for its ease of use, sound quality, diversity of application in various setups. Not 5 because of the adaptability issue and the other issues listed above. If you have no plans to update your iPad past 4th gen, it's great. You can also use your iPhone with it. It just doesn't look as cool.

Great dock - DOES work with iPad Air
Upgraded to this model from the first generation iO Dock because I got a new iPad Air with lightning connector. The first review is correct in that the dock is not designed to accommodate the Air, but totally incorrect in saying that it physically *won't*. The Air is much smaller than the sled that comes with the dock, so it will physically fit in there just fine. The problem is that the iPad is then very loose inside the dock; there's extra space at the top and bottom edges and a little extra space underneath. I easily fixed this by using two standard round wooden pencils to fill in the gaps at the top and bottom edges. I was worried that the pencils would push the side buttons on the iPad but they don't. It's a perfect fit and the "wings" of the dock still keep the iPad from falling out of it. To take up the space underneath the iPad, I cut a piece of corrugated cardboard (from the flap of the box it shipped in) which fills the gap nicely. The lightning cable still attaches perfectly and everything works exactly as it should. I will eventually replace the pencils with dowels of the same thickness, replace the cardboard with a thin foam core, and glue it all down to the sled so I don't have to reposition it every time I take the iPad out. Just wanted other iPad Air users to know that this WILL work with your device with a little easy modification. The dock actually has a removable sled so that it can accommodate older, thicker iPads. Alesis could so easily make a different removable sled designed to hold the Air, and I agree that it's totally shameful that they haven't. At least they're on the right track with the multiple connectors. This is the only iPad interface on the market that has a true dock form factor and 5-pin MIDI, which was an absolute must-have for me. I haven't had much luck using 5-pin to USB MIDI converters, they don't work with all instruments or all interfaces. And other interfaces feel more like the iPad is resting in a cradle more than nestled in a dock, like it could easily get knocked out of the dock. Tried the Focusrite and Griffin versions in-store and they both felt too precarious for live use, but kudos to Griffin for having real MIDI ports. Even with the modifications required, the iO Dock feels much more secure, particularly for a live situation. The only thing I don't like compared to the first generation model is that the connector is now on the right side instead of the left, so your iPad lock/power button is inaccessible. I have to lay the magnetic cover on top of the iPad to lock it when it's in the dock.Don't really have much to say about the dock itself except that it's perfect for my requirements. This is the second model I've purchased so clearly I'm really happy with its functionality. Waited for the lightning connector version to come out, and purchased in spite of reports that it didn't accommodate the Air because this is simply the only dock I wanted to use. I'm thrilled that it will actually work with my iPad.

Not Ready For Prime Time
This is a great idea, already out of date, with no simple fix in the foreseeable future. Quite simply, the Alesis iO Dock II will NOT physically accommodate the iPad AIR, which is the most popular, powerful, and currently available iPad ever. Alesis is very quiet about this, and does not respond to good customers like me and others who write and ask them if a simple fix is in the works. While the interface seems otherwise awesome, it also lacks a USB IN port to accommodate modern USB MIDI instruments (it strangely has only a USB OUT PORT. Fortunately It does have MIDI IN/OUT jacks which are great for older MIDI instruments and for use with iPad recording software like MultiTrackStudio and Cubasis, both of which receive and send MIDI through such ports (but older instruments can also use an adapter to send/receive via USB). The Alesis engineers seem to have fallen asleep at the wheel in upgrading their iO Dock I.....they're about two years behind on modern technology. They had the know-how and the opportunity to create the perfect iPad recording dock/interface, and they frankly blew it!! Check out the brand new FocusRite iTrack iDock..... it fits the new iPad's, has a USB IN port, has Apple's seal of approval, and is priced almost identically. Shame on you Alesis....such a great company otherwise.

Good design but very bad as an interface
Good design but very bad as an interface. Got distortion and dropouts running multiple relatively light CPU apps. Only recommended for recording, not live performance.

Fantastic... Alesis IO Dock II
I haven't got a chance to record with this little jam tho' I kept it with me for more than two years. But this locked down really helped me to explore thoroughly this fantastic device. It's quick and very user friendly. With the help of this device I have taken up 21 project during locked down and it's came out successfully for my youtube channel. Thanks to Alesis. What else could you ask more. Really satisfied and highly recommanded..

Use a mouse pad if you've got an iPad Air.
When I bought this I was using an iPad 4 and I was very pleased with it. I have the audio outputs from the dock connected to 2 of the audio inputs on an AKAI EIE pro. Just recently I've bought an iPad Air 2 and that's when I found a problem because although the dock powered it, the audio out wouldn't work. I solved this by putting a gel type mouse pad into the dock and the iPad on top of that and, hey presto, the audio outputs work.

Alesis IODock II
